Things we need

...
Things we need is a unit where the children can understand:
..
products we use come from many different places,
raw materials undergo changes before they become ...marketable products,
a number of people may be involved in producing a ...commodity.
....

Activities

Some activities you may want to do with your class are listed below.
...
This goes with that

After a few lessons on foods and where they come from (eg: milk from cows), introduce a game of bingo were the children, to get bingo, must match a whole card of foods to animals or plants that they origninated from.

This game is not only fun for the children, but it really reinforces the hard concept of the products that we use coming from many different places.

Supermarket sweep

This activity actually involves a field trip to the local supermarket. Give each child (maybe group, depending on class size) a different shopping list.

After having a guided tour with somebody from the store explaining all the different sections, and why they exist, the children must then go and write down what section each of the items from their shopping list is from.

The activity not only orientates the children with a supermarket and its sections, they must then apply that knowledge by finding the products from their lists.
