Greenwood High boys win Region I-AAAA title

MAULDIN — The Greenwood High boys cross country team captured the Region I-AAAA championship at Mauldin High School Wednesday.
The girls team placed fifth.
The triumph was overdue, according to GHS coach Sammy Owen. The Eagles lost the meet by a combined six points the past two years.
"We came in having two close losses, but we came in confident," he said. "We kind of had a vendetta in this meet after the past two years.
"A lot of guys ran their best races today and it couldn't have come at a better time."
Seven Eagles — Trevor Beesley, Branhan Lowther, Justin Coates, Ray Felton, Patrick Kelly, Nick Logan and J.D. Alewine — qualified for the Class AAAA state cross country championship.
"This has been a long time coming. It's good to get the monkey off our backs," Owen said.
