Built by a local enthusiast, Boris Cop of BC Electronics (Helsingborg, Sweden), the Metavox 201 is a pre-amp that can compete with any pre-amplifier in the heavy High-End range. Using the same Burr-Brown OP-amp as Mark Levinson's 38S combined with a virtual battery operation, this little beauty measures better than anything I've ever read about. A pricetag of 5.500 SEK is to be considered cheap, even very cheap, for it. Unfortunately for the rest of you, Boris is so busy with other projects that he isn't planning a new batch of 201's within the nearest future (98-10-01).

A lot of Metavox owners have already started using batteries to power them, seeing the effects of "virtual battery" and the fact that the preamp only consumes a minimum of power.
The 201 need inbetween 18 and 30 Volts, so two 12 volt lead accumulators will do the trick nicely. I have those already, but I haven't finished a chassi for those big ugly monsters, nor have I bought a charger for them...
