OFTT LEAGUE HISTORY

1999

The OFTT began in 1999 when a group of 12 people that were frequent visitors to the message boards at thehuddle.com decided to form a league to test the limit of their fantasy football acumen. The original 12 members were: figme (commissioner), Roadrunner, TTAC, Lucy, Natescape, Railyard, Dope, Chase, Pratts, Teemu, kc kid, and Turk 101.

The beginning was a bit bumpy as there were several ownership changes before the first game was played. Vulture replaced Teemu, and Loke took over for Turk 101. Then just before the draft, Madmax replaced kc kid. Shortly after the draft, Flattop joined in place of Loke (Loke's leaving is a story in itself, but we won't rehash that here). After these changes, the league was ready to commence play.

The season was highly competitive as two of the three divisions were won by just one game. The other division was won by only two games. The highlight of the regular season was Natescape's New England Chowdaheads racing to a 9-0 record. Flattop's Loggerheads also deserve special mention for taking over a poorly drafted team from Loke, reworking it in spite of the restrictive free agent pickup rule, and posting a 5-2 record in the second half of the season after starting 1-6.

In the playoffs, it was the wild card team -- Chase's Bushwackers -- that easily walked away with the first OFTT Championship by surpassing the 100 point mark in both the semi-finals and the OFTT Bowl. In the semi-finals, they whipped the team with the league's best record, the Chowdaheads, 108-94, then pounded Vulture's Ringwraiths 138-84 in the title game.

On the bottom side of the standings in the Toilet Bowl Tournament, Lucy's Ladies From Hell prevailed over the Loggerheads to earn the first pick in the 2000 draft.

2000

The 2000 season brought about two more ownership changes. Dope and Flattop left the league and were replaced by Bud Grant and Swidman. Also, Railyard changed his team's name from the Fighting FF Geeks to the Mullets (nobody knows why).

The regular season was again hotly contested as nine of the twelve teams finished within two games of each other -- two at 8-6, five at 7-7, one at 6-7-1, and one at 6-8. In fact, Roadrunner's Desert Cuckoos won the Central Division on a tiebreaker after finishing in a three-way tie at 7-7, and Railyard's Mullets won the West Division on a tiebreaker when they finished tied with Figme's dam b keys at 8-6. However, one team stood out above all the others. The Brew Crew, headed by rookie owner Bud Grant, finished with a sparkling record of 12-2, and easily won the East Division.

In the playoffs, the Brew Crew rolled right on through with a 118-105 win over the dam b keys in the semi-finals, and then they defeated the Mullets 152-103 in OFTT Bowl II to capture the league championship (much to the chagrin of the rest of the league. F'n rookie owners! Heh-heh).

In the 2000 OFTT Toilet Bowl, Swidman's Cruisers defeated Vulture's Ringwraiths by three points to earn the first pick in the 2001 draft.

2001

2001 began with another ownership change. Lucy decided to leave the league, and DC Thunder took over the franchise and renamed it the Thunderous Explosions. Also, the league took a vote and changed the number of keepers from two to three. The regular season proved to be very exciting. Two of the four playoff berths -- the Central Division champion and the wild card -- were not decided until the final week, and seven teams finished with eight or more victories. The East Division was again won by the defending league champion Brew Crew with a 10-4 record, the Mullets (10-4) repeated as West Division champs, the Bucknaked Pagan Psychos (9-5) captured the Central, and the New England Chowdaheads (9-5) took the wild card berth.

In the playoffs, the Psychos and Chowdaheads made it to OFTT Bowl III and battled for the league title. In one of the most improbable conclusions to a season, the Chowdaheads, who had a 1-4 record five weeks into the season, prevailed over the heavily-favored Psychos by a score of 96-79.

In the Toilet Bowl, the Ringwraiths (making their second straight T.B. finals appearance) defeated the Bushwackers for the right to pick first in the 2002 draft.

2002

In 2002, there were two more ownership changes to start the season. Chase and Railyard had to leave the league due to heavy constraints on their time, and they were replaced by Boilerdave and Merlin, respectively. Also, a very big change overall took place as OFTT became a money league, with a $25 entry fee. The regular season was again hotly contested with two of the three division titles not being decided until the final week. When the smoke cleared, the Brew Crew (9-5), Desert Cuckoos (11-2-1), and Ringwraiths (10-4) captured the East, Central, and West Division titles, respectively, and Pratts' Prevailers (10-3-1) grabbed the wild card berth. For the Brew Crew, it was their third straight division title, and the Cuckoos and Ringwraiths each got their second division titles. For the Prevailers, it would be their first trip to the playoffs. The Ringwraiths were the league's highest scoring team, while the Cuckoos' 11-2-1 mark was second best in league history.

In the playoffs, the Desert Cuckoos easily disposed of the Prevailers in their semi-finals matchup to advance to the finals, while the Brew Crew shockingly pulled an upset over the Ringwraiths in the other semi-final. In OFTT Bowl IV, the Brew Crew ran out to an early lead, but they couldn't hold on, and the Cuckoos came storming back to take the championship, 114-99.

In the Toilet Bowl, the Thunderous Explosions defeated MaddieClaire's Moxie (who were making their third consecutive appearance in the tournament, but first in the finals) to gain the right to pick first in the 2003 draft.

2003

2003 started out a little different than past seasons. For the first time, there were no ownership changes! Having some stability in the league made for a very competitive season. Even though the division winners clinched in the second-last week of the regular season, it still came down to the final week to determine the wild card team, where a couple of teams were fighting it out. When the regular season ended, the Statesboro Blues (9-4-1) captured the East Division, the defending champion Desert Cuckoos (10-4) won their second straight Central Division title, and the Cruisers (9-5) took the West Division crown. In the battle for the wild card spot, the Bucknaked Pagan Psychos (7-5-2) came out on top. It was amazing that the Psychos struggled to get into the playoffs. They were the highest scoring team in the league, but they hit a little tough luck with two tie games. Still, in Week 14 they had a shot to win the Central Division, but they fell to the Desert Cuckoos.

In the playoffs, the semi-finals saw the Psychos and Cuckoos meet for the second consecutive week and third time overall this season, and like the previous two meetings, the Cuckoos prevailed. In the other semi-finals matchup, the Cruisers got rid of the Blues, avenging a one-point loss to the Blues in Week 6. So that set the stage for the Cuckoos to try to defend their championship in OFTT Bowl V against the Cruisers. In a high-scoring affair, the Cruisers played their best game of the season and upset the Cuckoos 139-117 to become the new OFTT League Champions.

In the 2003 Toilet Bowl, MaddieClaire's Moxie made the most of their fourth-straight appearance in the tournament by defeating the dam b keys in the championship game for their first Toilet Bowl title. The Moxie will have the first pick in the 2004 draft.

2004

2004 was another season of change. Two owners dropped out of the league, and there was a scramble to replace them before the season began. Natescape was able to stay around long enough to draft for his Chowdaheads, and a friend of Nate's, who we all just knew as Andy, kindly stepped in to draft for Vulture's team (Vulture's whereabouts are still unknown). After the draft, two new owners were found. Elvis replaced Natescape as owner of the Chowdaheads (he didn't change the name), and Darkman took over Vulture's Ringwraiths and renamed them "Can You Beer Me Now?". The season then got underway without any problems.

The playoff races were close throughout the season, although the Alchemists threatened to run away with the West as they shot out to a 5-0 start. However, they were never able to mount more than a two-game lead at any time, and four consecutive losses at the end of the regular season knocked them out of a playoff berth. That opened the door for Can You Beer Me Now (9-5) to step up and snatch the West title, and the dam b keys (8-6) managed to get the tiebreakers to fall their way and steal the wild card berth. Pratts' Prevailers (8-6) built a three-game lead in the Central with three games left in the regular season, but they faded down the stretch (three straight losses) and needed a Week 14 loss by the Desert Cuckoos to barely hang on and win the division by one game. Despite being the league's highest-scoring team, the Cuckoos only managed a 7-7 record and missed out on the playoffs and a chance to get to their third straight OFTT Bowl. In the East Division, the Brew Crew (8-5-1) squeaked out the title by a half-game over the Thunderous Explosions. It was the fourth East Division championship in five years for the Brew Crew.

The playoffs provided some excitement with a couple of very close games. In the semi-finals, the dam b keys and Can You Beer Me Now played to a 129-129 tie and the outcome was decided on a tiebreaker (most bench points). Darkman's team was the victor and advanced to the OFTT Bowl to face the Prevailers, who shook off their regular-season-ending three-game slide and routed the Brew Crew in the other semi-finals match. The OFTT Bowl turned out to be a true championship-calibre game. In the highest-scoring and closest OFTT Bowl in league history, Can You Beer Me Now outlasted the Prevailers 148-145. It was an outstanding finish to another terrific OFTT season.

In the 2004 Toilet Bowl, the Desert Cuckoos triumped over the Statesboro Blues for the right to pick first in the 2005 draft.

2005

2005 turned out to be somewhat similar to 2003. There were no ownership changes (which the Commissioner was thankful for), but Elvis did change his team's name from the Chowdaheads to Fat, Drunk, & Stupid (which is no way to go through life!). All the division titles were clinched by the second-last week of the regular season, and the wild card race came down to the final week. In fact, two of the three division winners were the same as in 2003. The Statesboro Blues (9-5) won the East, and the Cruisers (11-3) won the West. But in a big surprise, the Moxie (9-5), who had appeared in five straight Toilet Bowl Tournaments, came out of oblivion to win their first Central Division title.

The divisional races weren't boring, though. While the Blues had their division locked up after Week 12, the other two only had a one-game lead in their respective divisions with two weeks to go. Actually, the Central and West divisions each had three teams in contention for their division titles through Week 12. In Week 13, a Moxie win over the Pagan Psychos took care of business in the Central, and a Cruisers win coupled with a loss by Can You Beer Me Now locked up the West Division. In the final week of the regular season, CYBMN (9-5) captured the wild card berth, earning them a chance to defend their championship.

In the semi-finals of the playoffs, the Cruisers and CYBMN met for the third time, and the result was the same as the first two -- the Cruisers triumphed, and the defending champs were dethroned. In the other semi-final, the Blues made the Moxie's first-ever playoff appearance a short one. OFTT Bowl VII wasn't quite as exciting as 2004's championship game (a 3-point barnburner). The Cruisers had little problem conquering the Blues, winning by 35 points. So just like in 2003, the Cruisers prevailed as OFTT champs. They became the first team in OFTT history to capture a second league title.

Speaking of second titles, in the 2005 Toilet Bowl, the Thunderous Explosions defeated Pratts' Prevailers for their second T.B. championship. They'll pick first in the 2006 draft.

2006

The 2006 season began with one ownership change. Big Al and his West Kentucky Phantoms joined OFTT and replaced the Moxie (we'll miss Madmax's team, they were a fixture in the Toilet Bowl Tournament). The divisional races didn't provide much excitement, as two of them were decided by Week 12 and the other was clinched in Week 13. The wild card race was a great dogfight, though, with four teams battling down to the wire for that last precious playoff spot.

As the regular season entered it's last few weeks, everyone had their eyes on two teams who were headed toward possible new league records. After twelve weeks, the Brew Crew stood at 11-1 as they attempted to set a new mark for best record in a season. Unfortunately, they fell in Week 13 and then finished at 12-2, which tied the league record (which the Brew Crew themselves set in 2000). At the bottom of the league, the dam b keys were sinking to a new league mark for futility. They dropped their last nine games and ended the season at 1-13, which beat the old mark of 1-12-1 that the Prevailers set in 2003.

At the completion of the regular season, there were some familiar names in the playoffs. The Brew Crew captured their fifth East Division title in seven years, the Desert Cuckoos won their fourth Central Division title, and the defending champion Cruisers nabbed their third West Division crown. To complete the playoff picture, the Statesboro Blues got the wild card berth with a tiebreaker over Can You Beer Me Now.

The playoff semi-finals provided a couple of surprises. The Blues rang up their second-highest point total of the season and upset the top-ranked Brew Crew in a shootout, 135-122. In the other semi-final, the Cruisers (who averaged nearly 100 ppg) posted their lowest score of the year and were upset by the Cuckoos (who were just 8th in the league in scoring). The final score was 75-68. With the Cruisers out, that meant we were going to have a new league champion. OFTT Bowl VIII featured two teams that faced each other in the Toilet Bowl championship two years earlier. For the Blues, it would be their second straight OFTT Bowl appearance, while the Cuckoos were appearing in the title game for the third time. The game wasn't very close as the Cuckoos just didn't have the firepower to keep up with the high-scoring Blues. A final score of 104-75 gave the Blues their first OFTT championship. It was also the first time the Blues had ever defeated the Cuckoos in seven attempts (I guess timing is everything, eh Dave?)

The 2006 Toilet Bowl Tournament gave us the seventh different winner in eight years. This time the Bucknaked Pagan Psychos, making their first T.B. appearance, captured the title by defeating the Thunderous Explosions (who were going for their third T.B. title). The Psychos will have the first pick in the 2007 draft.

2007

For only the third time in nine seasons, the league had no ownership changes, although Darkman changed his team's name. Can You Beer Me Now became the Renegades. Unlike the previous two seasons, most of the playoff races came down to the wire. The Brew Crew had clinched the East Division after Week 12, but the Central and West came down to the final week, as did the wild card.

In the Central Division, the Desert Cuckoos were 7-3-1 and held a one-game lead going into the final three divisional games, but they collapsed and lost all three games. The Phantoms went 2-1 in their last three to make a run at the division title, but the Pagan Psychos crushed their three opponents, averaging 140.3 ppg (with an average winning margin of 44 ppg) to capture the division crown, their first since 2001.

The West was also a three-team race. Going into the final divisional games, the Alchemists and Renegades were both 7-4, and the dam b keys were 6-5. The Alchemists won all three of their games and took the West title by one game over the Renegades. However, the Renegades 9-5 record was good enough to win the wild card berth by one-half game over the Phantoms.

In the semi-finals of the playoffs, neither game was close. The Psychos big scoring spree came to an end as they were defeated by the Brew Crew, 99-82. In the other contest, the Alchemists took the rubber game from the Renegades, 86-70 (they had split their two regular season games). OFTT Bowl VIII was a matchup of the Brew Crew, who were making their third appearance in the big game, and the Alchemists, making their inaugural appearance. Bud's team had scored over 100 points in their final six regular season games and 99 points in the semi-finals, while Merlin's squad had reeled off seven straight wins over the same span. The Brew Crew finally ran out of gas as the Alchemists prevailed, 82-65, for their first OFTT championship.

In the 2007 Toilet Bowl Tournament, the Cruisers won their two games to capture the T.B. championship. They now have two T.B. titles to go along with their two OFTT championships (their other T.B. title was back in 2000). The Cruisers will have the first pick in the 2008 draft.

2008

The 2008 season started as many other OFTT seasons had, with ownership changes. After two short seasons, Big Al stepped down from the league. He was replaced by a familiar name. Flattop, who played back in OFTT's inaugural season of 1999, rejoined the league and named his new team the Talons. Also, DC Thunder and his Thunderous Explosions left the league after playing for seven years. Unfortunately, his departure came just before the draft, and another owner could not be found to take his place. Therefore, the league's website was set on auto-draft for the franchise, and the Commissioner took over the weekly operations of the team and named them the No Names.

Following the draft, the league was ready for play. Amazingly, the computer did a fine job drafting the No Names. They raced out to a 6-0 record on their way to a fine 11-3 season, and the East Division title. In fact, they clinced the division with three weeks left to play.

The West Division had a pretty good race going for most of the season, although none of the teams were actually doing all that well. With three weeks to play, all four teams in the division were under .500, and three of the four still had a chance to win the division. The Alchemist prevailed by putting together a three-game win streak.

The Central Division had an outstanding race between two old rivals. The Desert Cuckoos and Pagan Psychos were both 8-3 heading in the final three divisional games. They both won the first two games, setting up their traditional Week 14 showdown for the division title. The Cuckoos avenged their Week 5 loss to the Psychos with a 120-100 victory to win the division. Despite the loss, the Psychos' 10-4 record was plenty good enough to get the wild card berth.

In the playoffs, the Psychos had the unenviable task of facing the 11-3 No Names. Undaunted, the Psychos ripped through the No Names 100-66. It was by far the lowest point total for the No Names all season (their previous low was 94 points). In the other semi-final, the Cuckoos had no problem with the Alchemists, dispatching them by 25 points. That set up the two old rivals to face each other in OFTT Bowl X, their third meeting of the season. It marked the first time in 22 meetings that the Cuckoos and Psychos would face each other in the championship game. The game was fairly close throughout, but the Cuckoos took the lead late and won 95-90 for their second OFTT championship.

In the 2008 Toilet Bowl Tournament, the Cruisers defeated the Statesboro Blues and the Renegades (who they lost to twice in the regular season) to gain their second consecutive Toilet Bowl title, and third overall. They will select first in the 2009 draft.

2009

The 2009 season started with just one owership change. The No Names, which was a vacant team run by the Commissioner, was taken over by Mort and renamed RipTide.

With a full 12 owners set, the league proceeded with the 2009 draft. In similar fashion to the previous season, when the computer drafted the No Names team, two teams were drafted by the computer. The Talons' owner was unable to attend the draft due to work obligations and let the computer draft most of his squad, although he was able to put in a few selections himself for the early rounds. The Prevailers' owner was a no-show for the draft and the computer selected his team entirely. The 2009 season was then ready to commence.

The East Division was a case of the haves and have-nots. The Statesboro Blues and Brew Crew battled neck-and-neck down to the wire. A Week 14 win by the Blues over the Brew Crew gave the Blues the East Division crown by a half-game, as the Blues finished at 10-3-1 while the Brew Crew finished at 10-4. However, the Brew Crew's fine record did earn them the wild card berth. As for the other two teams in the East, RipTide (3-11)and Fat, Drunk, & Stupid (3-9-2) were never close to being in the race.

The Central Division race wasn't very close in 2009, and for only the fourth time in 11 seasons, neither the Desert Cuckoos (4-8-2) nor the Pagan Psychos (6-7-1) were the division champion. Like the No Names in 2008, having the computer draft the team seemed to work for the Talons as they compiled a record of 9-4-1 and won the Central Division title by three games. However, it didn't work for the Prevailers as they stumbled to a record of 4-10 and finished in the division's basement. The Talons' division title marked the first trip ever to the OFTT playoffs for the owner, Flattop.

The West Division was the most competitive division in 2009, as only one team finished below the .500 mark. However, the Cruisers (10-4) had the division crown wrapped up after Week 12. The Renegades were respectable at 8-6, but fell 2-games shy of the wild card berth. The dam b keys finished a .500 (7-7), while the Alchemists (6-7-1) struggled after winning the division the previous two seasons.

The playoffs began with the Blues and Brew Crew facing each other for the second consecutive week. In a reversal of the Week 14 outcome, the Brew Crew knocked off the East champs, 104-93, to advance to the OFTT Bowl for the fourth time. In the other semi-final, the Talons dismantled the Cruisers, 122-93, to gain their first OFTT Bowl appearance. The championship game was a low-scoring affair. Despite averaging 104 ppg the previous three weeks, the Talons offense fizzled and the Brew Crew prevailed, 84-73. It was the Brew Crew's second OFTT championship, coming nine years after their first one. They're the third team in OFTT history to have two league titles.

After the 2008 season, the league discontinued the Toilet Bowl Tournament due to the league moving to a re-draft format, rendering useless the point of the T.B. winner getting the first pick in the following season's draft.
