CARSON HOWELL
Four Generations Outline Descendant Tree

Rev. CARSON HOWELL was born around 1768. The earliest date that he is mentioned is around 1803 when he married Nancy Dolly Cook. He appears for the first time in the 1810 census in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. This area is now Aiken County near Wagener, SC.

Carson's parents are still unknown to his descendants. Some say that his father's name was Hopkin.

Carson and Nancy were the parents of: Margaret, b May 26, 1806; John Jacob b February 4, 1804; Mary b May 5, 1809; Dorothy "Dolly" b March 23, 1812; JOSIAH(photo), b January 9, 1814; and Catherine "Hattie" b May 5, 1820.

Margaret's descendants are filed in the Howell-Johnson Library; Mary's descendants are filed in the Huckabee Library; Dorothy and Catherine's descendants are filed in the Howell-Garvin Library;

John Jacob Howell lived in the Cedar Creek section of Lexington County near Pelion, SC. He had a large plantation. In 1854 he purchased a tract of land of 5100 acres. This was situated in the Bull Swamp section of Lexington County. Another tract was 4000 acres of Cedar Creek near Williamson's Mill. Williamson's Mill was located on Cedar Creek Road where Cedar Creek crosses.



Second Generation
John Jacob Howell, born February 4, 1804. died August 30, 1868. He mustered in July 1864 at Batesburg, SC. He was a private in Co. E, 2nd Battalion, SC State Troops. Unit disbanded April 1865 at Spartanburg, SC. (Recollections and Reminiscences By the UDC of SC; vol 6, p67) General Sherman burned John Howell's saw mill on his march to Columbia in February, 1865. He married Martha Ann Williamson, born June 25, 1814, in Lexington Co., SC. died January 4, 1893.

JOSIAH HOWELL married Mary Rorie on September 19, 1833. Mary was the daughter of Darling Rorie and Elizabeth Whitney. JOSIAH served as First Lieutenant in Co. G 2 SC CSA.




Third Generation

Children of John Jacob and Martha Ann:
1. John Pearson, born, April 23, 1836, in Cedar Creek, Pelion, Lexington Co. , SC. died, May 19, 1912. (North Trade Journal, Lexington Co., SC. 10/8/97; John Pearson Howell April 22, 1836 - May 9,1912), John enlisted in the CSA on September 3, 1861 for the duration of the war. His unit was Company K, 13th S.C. Volunteers. Sgt Howell was wounded August 29, 1862 at the second battle of Bull Run, also known as the Battle of Manasses.

2. Martha Ann. She married Cackroft.

3. James Carson Sr. born, September 16, 1841, in Batesburg, Saluda Co., SC. died, November 10, 1906, in Blackman, Santa Rosa Co., FL. He enlisted in the Confederate army and was a member of Co. K. 13th Regt., a good soldier and among those that marched over the battle fields of Virginia, and faced shot and shell in twenty-seven different battles and received seven wounds, all of which he survived.

Fourth Generation

John Pearson Howell, married Cynthia Huckabee, January 19, 1865, in Lexington Co., SC. born May 20, 1844, in Lexington Co., SC. died, October 10, 1918, in Swansea, Lexington Co., SC.

1. Martha Ann LaVina born, March 18, 1866, in Lexington Co., SC. died, July 27, 1903. She married William Cardin

James Carson Howell Sr. married Ellen Smyly, daughter of Joseph Smyly and Catherine Stewart Caldwell, circa 1868, in Pelion, Lexington Co., SC. born, March 22, 1845, in Walterboro, Colleton Co., SC. died, July 26, 1925.
