Behavior: Parenting

The vast majority of frogs lay their eggs and then abandon them to fend for themselves, but some stay to guard and take care of their babies. The parents, normally the mother, usually attach the eggs to themselves in some way, or, in some rare cases, swallow them. One example, the Australian gastric brooding frog, swallows her eggs and the developing frogs grow in her stomach. Some keep their eggs in a pouch or in their vocal sac. Still others attach their eggs to their hind legs. A few frogs lay their eggs in a protected area and then stay behind and care for them until they hatch.
