Development: Metamorphosis
Metamorphosis is the change of physical form or structure of something. In frogs, metamorphosis is a process that takes place through several stages. This can take from a few days or, in some species, several years for the process to complete. Unlike popular belief, not all frogs undergo metamorphosis. Some frogs, such as the Pipa Pipa, are born fully formed.
All frogs begin as eggs. How long they develop as eggs depends upon the environment that they are in. Frogs which lay eggs in temporary or shallow pools susceptible to predators often have a much shorter incubation chambers than those whose eggs are laid under more secure conditions. Generally, eggs hatch between three and twenty-five days.
