MATERIALS

Materials is an area of Chemistry that attempts to create useful products for use in a wide variety of areas. Microscopic properties of individual molecules are designed or engineered for their properties in bulk products. Microscopic properties of atomic and molecular components may include electric, magnetic, thermal, mechanical, or optical properties. The range of applications of materials may be as small as computer components or as large as the concrete or cement used in tall buildings.

Some common material categories based on chemical composition or chemical and physical properties are:

METALS
NONMETALS
ORGANIC [CONTAINING CARBON]
INORGANIC [NOT CONTAINING CARBON]
=======
[WHAT HAPPENS IN WATER]
ACIDS
BASES
SALTS
ELECTROLYTE
NON-ELECTROLYTE
=======
[SOLUTE MIXTURE PARTICLE SIZE]
HETEROGENEOUS MIXURE
SOLUTION
COLLOID
=======
[ELECTRICAL, THERMAL, SOUND, MORE]
CONDUCTOR
SEMICONDUCTOR
INSULATOR
========= NUCLEAR

Other categories of materials have more to do with how they are made

POLYMERS
CERAMICS
GLASS
STONE
BIOMATERIALS
BIO-BASED MATERIALS
COMPOSITES
PORTLAND CEMENT
CARBON ONLY
and the biggest craze for the 21st century are NANOMATERIALS which were first concieved in 1959. A technology lag from concept to practice of about 40 years.
