Electrochemistry is the study of the electromagnetic properties of substances. Electronic components, batteries, trasmission wires or cables, magnetic materials are created, developed and improved in this field. Substances are electronically defined as CONDUCTORS, SEMICONDUCTORS, and INSULATORS. Elements are easily defined according to their electric properties. METALS are conductors, SEMIMETALS are semiconductors, and NONMETALS are insulators.
Electrochemistry occurs wherever there is oxidaton
and reduction. When elements or compounds lose electrons to form positively charged CATIONS,
they are OXIDIZED. When When substances gain electrons to form negatively charged ANIONS,
they are REDUCED. The material which is oxidized
is a REDUCING AGENT. The substance which is reduced is an OXIDIZING AGENT.
RESISTENCE, CONDUCTIVITY, and SUPERCONDUCTIVITY are properties related to how easily electrons can flow through a material. Ironically, the best metals are not always the best superconductors. SUPERCONDUCTORS come in TYPE I, TYPE II, and others.
