Hi,
Oh my lord, I am, to put it lightly, "blown away" - what a site! I think I remember being in Bahrain some many many years ago - not sure which years but I certainly remember some of your names / photo's.
Hope you all have a great Christmas and best wishes for 2003.

I went to the Bahrain School with my sister Caroline 76 - 79 and before that at St Christophers. I have photos of Elaine Hancock, Christianne Bowman, Slug and Karen Needham all outside one of our classrooms, also photos in the dessert one weekend. Must post them on this site. I remember Pedro Ferriera and his friend Pedro. Great site.

I was at the BS from about 76 - 79 and before that at St Christophers. Lived in the Paddocks in Manama up from the British Club. I have photos similar to some of those on this site obviously taken around the same time. I have pictures of Elaine Hancock, Christianne Bowman, Slug, Karen Needham all outside one of the class rooms and photos of a weekend out in the dessert - must upload them. I remember Pedro Ferriera and his friend Pedro! Great site.

Unfortunately i was old enough to party when i was in Bahrain. Attended Awali School until about 1997 when i got shipped to bording school. But if you partied around that year you probably know my sister 'Ayla' whos still going strong, but in Caliornia.. I always remember they were ALWAYS putting down tarmac somewhere...even on the smooth roads...and when theyd come around in the morning and 'spray' there'd be 'mist' around for about an hour. I really miss Bahrain, i havent been back since 1989 but i would really like to..i hear its changed alot.
Im now back in the UK after an 11 year stay in California with my 6 year old son and really loving it..not missing the heat at all If you remember me, i would love to hear from you...and if you attended Awali School in the 80's you can try : bahrainnet.fsnet.co.uk
there are a lot of people on that web site aswell.
hope to hear from someone..

What a great site. Can't get my pic to upload (problem on this end) but I will keep trying. Paul McClosky is the only name I recognise, went to Bahrain school for a semester, '73-'74, graduated early (thought it the "smart" thing to do, DOH!). Best time at school I ever had and I left early. Must not have learned much. I love reading the the happiness in everyone's messages. What an impact living in that part of the world had on all of us.

Hello There!
I was going back in time and thought looking up Awali and Bahrain. I was an Awali kid 1960-67. I remember Alison Bain, Hazel Moran, Donna Elford, Jimmy Murray, Miss Veetch, and a Manama girl British Club called Jocelyn Worts and some others.
Although not in the Uk, I am happy to have found this site. Maybe someone of the past will contact me. Martin J. van Es (Dutch) then: Zallaque road 408B Awali. Good health to you all!

Hi all!
I resided in Bahrain from about 83 to 85- including attending Bahrain School and sailing monohulls at BYC... Love to get ahold of anyone from then, and love to get back, though I haven't travelled much since. Give me a shout!

Flying boats!!! Wow. We arrived a bit later than that, but still in the days when it would take two, and occasionally three stops to London. I remember stopping Kuwait/Baghdad/Rome on BOAC, and Dhahran/Damascus/Vienna on QANTAS in 1967 MT
(outbound in 1961 took 19 hours on a Bristol Britannia Rome-Beirut-Baghdad-Kuwait-Bahrain....Kuwait was interesting in September..Tin hut for a transit hall where I had my first 'fizzy' drink ...Pepsi I think warm and covered in flies!! Stayed In Speedbird House in the middle of Manama for the first 3 months ..!! Thankfully the return flight to London the next year was a jet ...a Comet 4C via Beirut & Rome.. MJS)
The Gymkhana Club became the British Club in the mid-60's, and the changeover to driving on the right hand side of the road took place (if the memory serves) at midnight on Nov 31st / Dec 1st 1967. Certainly sometime around then.
(I have some 8mmfilm transposed onto video that shows the Gymkhana Club gardens and pool during my 8th birthday party MJS)
We used to call 100 fils a rupee, or 'one chip', even into the 70's.
(I used to wander across the footabll pitch outside the Jufair gates to the little hole in wall shop to buy my Chicklet chewing gum in anna's MJS)

I was slightly before Bill Geeleher's time in Awali School, 1949 to late 1951, the holidays in the '50s. Yes, the old Rupee was worth one shilling and sixpence. Gulf Aviation as it was formed in 1950 I think, but cannot remember it having any connection with the old BOAC. (I first arrived in a flying boat!)
Is what is now termed "the Sheik's Beach" the Zellaq beach that all of us from Awali used? There was no fenced areas in my time.
Also, is the Dilmun club the former Gymkhana Club?

Asalaam 'alaikum ... (Golden Oldie '55-'85!) ....

I have been housebound for awhile and this machine has been great company! (I must be going mad talking to a machine!!)I've still got my "L" plates on but slowly getting the hang of it..a bit like the first time I used an electric typewriter eeeeeee..That is not what my boss at the time said!!We spent the first eighteen years in Awali..a move to Alba for five years with a short stay in Sheik Khalid Bungalows Budayia then Barbar..then back to Awali..Andrew is working and living "somewhere in the south of England" not married yet..for the people who remember him and he is on the contact list..When he brings my scanner up have some pictures to send in..Only one more thing to say..a big "Thank You" to Gail and Steve for what must take quite a bit of their time up..in keeping this site going for everyone to enjoy..Hope your finger is better Steve..More on the message board..later. fii amaan illaah.

Does anybody remember when in Bahrain you used to drive on the left hand side of the road, and it was 16 Annas to the Indian Rupee, and there was absolutely nothing between Manama and Awali except the Sheiks summer palace, Kanoo was just a small travel agent and Gulf Air was part of BOAC.If you do remember, god you must be old, but I'd like to hear from you anyway.

Hi,
These pages sure bring back memories. I noticed one of the Callan "clan" writings in the guest book. The names and places mentioned there remind me of my younger years. Although I don't consider myself to be that old yet...
Anyone who wishes to contact me can get in touch with me via e-mail or gsm (preferably SMS-message). Tel +358-40-5076636.
I sure miss the good old days!

Hello Everyone.
What a great website, just found out about it from Graham Croxford in NZ only two days ago after he spotted my mug in the rogues gallery.
Great to see all the old faces and names again.
In particularI want to say Hi to Alan Corcoran and I have never forgiven myself for not being able to meet you all those years ago when I was going back overseas to my then project,I should have found the time mate. Then I lost my address book after I got pissed and fell in a taxi in Abu Dhabi, and left the book behind after I fell out of it,and that was your parents address in Kent gone as well.
Remember our Hobie at the Bapco beach? that eventually went to the Tavvy family who I see are
writing in force except big John, wonder where he is?
How about Clive Roberts, another casualty when the book went along with hundreds of others.
Remember all the names and faces so well.
Hello to Sarah and Mark Burton,Steve Tucker,Pete Clemow, Jo et al.
I bumped into Paul Bromfield in Nigeria a few years ago where he has his own diving company, with an office in Lagos and another in Port Harcourt and was doing very well, another book casualty.
I went away to sea after Bapco for three years followed by a little over a year in Iraq during the war ,and have never stopped travelling since.
Currently in my third year in South Korea and I've just been to my fourth world cup game, but unfortunately none of England's as they're in Japan.
Anyone who remembers me please feel free to email me and I promise to reply to anyone who bothers.
All the best everyone.

Spent many a happy hour looking at this site since I first found it at the start of the year. So many names that I recognise from what now seems like a long time ago - well, it was a long time ago! I got to Bahrain (with my folks and two brothers) at the start of the 70's - 1971 I think - if I remember, we used to live over the road from the cricket/sport ground - I remember that it was the same street as Peter Gordon.
I've often wondered what happened to some of the folks that I spent many fine times with back then - the class of 74 - David Baxter/Sara Burton/Martin Milburn/Sharon Nutter/Jane Robertson to name a few.
It was great to see some of the old photos- and some of the new ones - some people have changed so much.
I left Bahrain in 1975 to go to school in Colwyn Bay, but my folks left Bahrain soon after so I went to regular school in North Wales.
After school, I did some travelling, then trained as an engineer - got bored with this, so went to uni to do social work training. Have been doing this for a few years now, and currently working in the Shetland Islands - a carbon copy of Bahrain, apart from the sun/heat/sand/scantily clad women - more sheep though!!
Anyway - enjoyed this site - if anyone remembers me, please feel free to get in touch - it would be good to catch up
Bye for now

This is amazing! I've been browsing for a few hours now, names and places keep rushing back to my memory. I am now feeling very homesick! I have thought about going back and seeing home and showing my kids where i grew up, but i don't want to spoil my memories. If any of you don't know my name,.... i was one of "the terrible twins." I have three daughters, you may be suprised but i had twins! I've been married for 21 years this July, and i'm always travelling, it must be all those years when we travelled back and forth between Bahrain and England, it became a habit i just can't break! I have book marked the site, now i can show my kids, where i came from.

Still waiting to hear from a load of peeps I knew (schooldays - back in 70's- until 95) But overall I was actually there 30 years (!!) from '65.
Now living in Isle of Man (tax haven!) Been back to Gulf (Bahrain and Dubai) twice since leaving in '95 (what a wrench..) Still get very homesick... Been on this site off & on since hearing about it early last year. Great stuff.
Have been in touch with Dave Gilchrist, Karinm Mansouri and a few others from American School (aka Bahrain School later on...) But would still love to hear from the likes of: Billy Murray, Richard Foreman, Stuart Pemberton, etc. Anyone from Awali Days/ Brit Club crowd of 70's...
Great memories!!

My brother inlaw David Crankshaw put me onto this great site. Seeing one or two to names like Phil and Dennis Wright brought back some wild memories of the mid 1970s when life was fun with no worries. I married Susan Crankshaw in Bahrain way back in 1979 and we left Bahrain in 2000 after Susan had a serious car accident. She is now on the road to recovery back in the UK. As for me I just can't seem to leave the Gulf, I am now working in Dubai and still visit Bahrain every few months.
Whatever happened to Mike Wood, Leslie Hart, Deirdre Best,Paul Best and so many others of the Brit club crowd?
Hope to hear from some of you in the future.
Cheers,
Ian Atkinson.

I went to BS 72-75. Part of the original football team. There were just a few of us in the British curriculum then. Graham Bell, Doug Halbert, David Gilchrist, Stuart Pemberton, Justin Staveley, Billy Murray, Jonathan Mills, Peter Taylor. Then there were the brits in Awali; Ron and Karen Powrie and Pat Hardy. Anybody know of them? Fantastic, brilliant days. Great site, long may it grow.

Just heard a bit of sad news from another ex-Radio Bahrain DJ - John Cabrera. He tells me that Mark Morrell recently passed away. Mark was a full-timer at Radio Bahrain late 70's to mid 80's,

I went to the Sacred Heart convent school in Manama from about 1956 to 1959 and then left for boarding school. anybody out there who remembers the school? Is it still there? At the time it was the only English speaking school except for one for the Americans based in Bahrain and the convent only took boys upto 11 years. The brits left at 11 to go to boarding school. My father worked for the Bahrain government - anyone remember the Gymkana Club? Use by most ex pats? my best friend at school was Viv Parker- we kept in touch until the late 1970s but then lost touch.

Hi Mark
I stumbled across this site only last night and was pleasantly surprised by the number of people I reckonised. Thanks for your e-mail which I did reply to - let me know if you got it OK. You mentioned the Dilmun Club which brought back some found memories; swimming, playing squash/tennis in the sun and of course drinking larger in the sun next to a swimming pool - OH what I would give to be in that situation now. I've just heard from Debbie Whitelaw who will also remeber the Dilmun Club. Hopefully over the next few days a few more past freinds will get in touch. Perhaps this could lead to a reunion somewhere.
Speak to you later

What a great site.....and so many memories brought back. Love the Radio Bahrain stuff. I was on air with them in various shows....from 1977 to 1986, for the last couple of years doing Breakfast. Also so many memories from all the discos we did all over the island. I remember after one of my very early gigs at Awali Hall being a bit the worse for wear and being invited by a kind family to stay at their house. They moved their son out of his room and let me have his bed.....unfortunately he had just had chickenpox........so shortly afterwards at the age of 20, so did I!!
My brother Brian was a Crew Controller for Gulf air....so remember lots of the Gulf Air folk.
Left in 1986 to see if I could get in to radio in the UK.
My first wife Debbie and I divorced in 1994. I now live near Helston in Cornwall with wife Eve and stepdaughter Carrianne. My two children Simon and Alison live with their mum in Devon, and I see plenty of them, they are now 15 and 13 respectively.
I have worked for a number of radio stations, but currently I am Programme Director and Breakfast Presenter at Pirate FM in the sunny South West UK
Anyone who remembers me or my bruv please drop us an email. Brian is now in Hong Kong working for Cathay with wife Viv and their thre kids.

Great Site - And Steve - you should be awarded something for all your efforts! A great site.
So many people have been to "Awali" or Bahrain to so many people it means such a significant part of their lives and so many diversified and different things. We were in effect one big happy family. Thank you for putting together something that a lot of us would like to have done but never knew how!

Hi
What a brilliant site - Bahrain was a big part of my life and my family's (25 years) and it is great being able to see names/faces from those days. Even though I was only at the Bahrain Int'l School for a few years, many stayed on after those days. Does anyone have an old school year book from 1973 - 1975?? to lend out only? Or is there a way of buying one - all these years later??
Fab website.

Thanks Steve for such a great website. It has been interesting trying to put some faces to names. I was only in Bahrain (British side) for two years and would love to hear from Kristi Brooks. She did visit me in Australia about 15 years ago but we have since lost touch. If anyone can help, please let me know. I am currently living in Beaumont, Texas as my husband is on assignment but our real home is in Melbourne, Australia. I have two boys, seven and six. I can't believe how much all the ex-pupils are spread around the world. It must be in our blood from childhood. Everyone have a great 2002. I look forward to catching up with more people.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in this site for giving me a chance to stroll down memory lane, one which I truly thought would never happen. Thanks to all those that have supported the site during 2001, we are now recording regular monthly 'hits' of nearly 3000. Although this means very little in itself, it does make the work involved in putting things together all worthwhile.
A special thank you to Gail Taliep who has been busier than I have recently, updating the contact list and keeping the homepage up to date.
2002 will hopefully be busier than ever, we are looking for fresh photo's, memories and ideas for the site. If you can think of anything that will enhance things please let Gail or myself know.
