BACKWhat was it that made Bahrain so special?
God, have I asked myself that question a million times! It’s twenty one years later and I still can’t give
myself a simple answer.
I think part of it was that it was so different to what I was used to, coming from primary school in a little Scottish town to BHS. The amazing potpourri of people at the school and how easy it was to fit in. I am surprised at how much I actually remember from those days….not everything was done in a haze.
The lack of responsibility, the freedom, the parties and the whole social scene. It wouldn’t have been the same anywhere else…I moved to Cape Town after Bahrain and it was still not as much fun. I know that my parents were doing the expat social thing, so I was pretty much left to my own devices…
Could it be all of the new experiences…first boyfriend, first real parties, getting drunk for the first time, first disco’s, first kisses etc… dunno about that, I still don’t think it would have been the same elsewhere. What can I say, living there was the best, the people – the greatest anything that came afterwards had a hard act to follow. I was literally put on the plane kicking and screaming and have regretted leaving ever since.
To Karen – I miss you, still, remember every February and wish you Happy Birthday. To Bassam – Hey B how are you? I still remember you, and often wonder what happened to you. To everyone else…Kylie, Laurie, Sarah, Paula, Fiona, Donna, Nicci, Alison, Tracey, Kim, Nada, Nirvana, Colette, Sean, Kenny, Steve, Darren, Brian, Brad, Kevin, Alan, Richard etc…..I hope life has been good to you. To everyone else I haven’t mentioned…give me a break I’m getting old…
Salaam
