Werebeast,
werewolf, lycanthrope. All these words describe as similar
beast. a human who can by the cycles of the moon, or by will
alone can turn from an average human into a powerful animal.
The most familiar to most it the werewolf. This type also
seems to have the most modern myth and interest centered on
it. Werewolf myths are many. The werebeasts seem quite
powerful and frightening, and don't hold as much intrigue or
mystery as say vampires, but like real vampires the truth
behind werebeasts is just as much as a disappointment as the
truth about vampires.
Myth #1: Werebeasts are humans that can turn
into full animals or half animal crosses.
Truth: Most
people who are or consider themselves werebeasts do not
shape shift in the physical plane, this is for a couple of
reasons. The first is that most weres are what you would
call a therianthrope, or a 'spiritual shapeshifter'. Weres
are highly spiritual beings with a strong spiritual
connection with a specific animal. Why this is, no one
knows. This bond is not, however, like a fondness for a pet.
It is of a deeper nature, a brothership and understanding.
Most weres, like vampires, know early in their lives that
they are 'different'. Though some of the symptoms may point
to vampirism, there are distinctive differences. The second
reason that weres don't actually shift is that there simply
is not enough energy to facilitate such a supernatural
occurrence. It has been known that some weres can change
their eye color, skin color to a degree, height, or develop
animal like physical characteristics. If this is coincidence
or intentional I don't know.
Myth #2: Werebeasts powers and changes are
governed by the moon.
Truth: Weres are
no more governed by the moon than a normal person. Were are
still raised in society and have human morals and social
taboos. A weres' powers are usually similar to their animal
counter part. The weres' spirit is basically half animal
half human. It is their animal counterpart which gives them
their so called 'powers' but also can effect them with the
species' inherent weaknesses. Most werebeasts animal
counterparts are predatory, but not limited to. Also most
are based in reality, but some that claim to be weredragons
and such are not so rare. But true weres are usually only
linked with a single animal. Occasionally two within the
same genus (two different big cats for example) people who
claim to have links with more than two animals are not so
rare, but often it is more in a shamanic sense. In that case
there would be a dominant animal and one that would
occasionally manifest. There are a few of true polyweres out
there, but most again have a primary, secondary, etc. Some
are young weres who have not yet truly found their
phenotype. Some weres say that they experience strange and
unusual sensations during the full moon, but this does not
hold true for every were.
Myth#3: If you are bitten by a werebeast you
will turn into one.
Truth: People who
are weres are normally born the way they are, with their
animal spirit. they may not actually know what their calling
is until later in their lives, but they know they are wild
inside, and cities and society often bother them. I don't
personally know anyway to make someone else a were if they
were not born that way.
Myth#4: Werewolves are the only REAL
werebeasts.
Truth: I know
I'll probably get slagged for that one, but for many of the
unenlightened they are the only kind they know to exist. A
werebear? Werefalcon? Werepanther? Any predatory animal can
usually be found in the spiritual bond (one per person of
course) of a werebeast. It is often again, that a young were
looking for some way of know what he/she is may think that
they are a vampire. However, most young weres will feel
disgusted at the thought and keep looking. This is due to a
number of things I'll get to.
Myth #5: Werebeasts are nigh impossible to
kill.
Truth: Not
really, perhaps more tenacious, but we bleed when
bludgeoned.
