The Simply Scottish Christmas Show
December 23rd, 1998

It's Wednesday, December 23rd, and you're listening to Simply Scottish, with your host Andrew McDiarmid. Tonight, the Simply Scottish Christmas Special, celebrating Christmas in Scotland, with Scottish Christmas songs, stories, Scottish greetings, news, and your chance to win some Scottish Christmas CD's. All that and more is coming right up, so tonight, come in from the cold, and enjoy Christmas in Scotland. LET MUSIC PLAY

Goodevening everyone, and a very merry Christmas to you. Welcome to the Christmas edition of Simply Scottish. I'm your host Andrew McDiarmid. Tonight, you'll hear an array of Scottish Christmas carols and music, plus some Scottish stories, news, and Holiday greetings to you all the way from Scotland. You'll also have a chance tonight to win one of two Scottish Christmas CD's tonight, and I'll have the questions for those in just a bit. First though, here's Andrew Young on the Scottish bagpipes with some traditional Christmas carols.

That was Scottish bagpiper Andrew Young with some traditional Christmas songs. It's unusual, even for me, to hear Christmas music played on the bagpipes. It's just not that common, really. When I showed my dad this music for the first time, he said he had never heard Christmas music on the bagpipes. But it does sound nice though. Well, it's Wednesday, the 23rd of December, and that means tomorrow is Christmas Eve. Now I don't know about you, but I still do not have all my Christmas shopping done. I always wait until the last moment. I guess I'll run to the shops after tonight's show and see what I can find. I mean, with my family it's kind of hard to decide what to get them. I've got mum saying "It's ok, honey, you don't have to get us anything." and my sister Narooma begging for Ice Skates and an ice rink, which in this current cold weather doesn't sound as silly as the hot, sweaty day she first asked me for them. And my Dad, well, I guess just another can of beans, right Dad?

Tomorrow, on Christmas Eve, churches around the world will be gathering for a special little Christmas Eve service. I really enjoy the one we have at First Baptist Church in Harlingen. I love when they put the lights out, and we all light candles and sing Silent Night. It's a really peaceful time. Anyway, if you want to experience that, and you don't know exactly where to go, you can come with my family and I to ours.....it's not very long, just long enough to remember the wonderful thing that has happened, and the reason there is Christmas - Jesus' birth. So if you would like to join me at a candlelight Christmas Eve Service, give me a call sometime tonight, and we can set it up. It would also be a great time to meet you. The number to call tonight is 1-800-839-6771. That's 1-800-839-6771.

You're listening to the Simply Scottish Christmas Special.

I've got two Cd's right here that I'm giving to you tonight - one is a Scottish group, the Poor Claires, with an album of Scottish Christmas music called Songs for Midwinter. The other is called the Night before a Celtic Christmas. Now, you can win one of these CD's by simply answering the question that comes along with each. We'll start with the Christmas album by Scottish group The Poor Claires, complete with traditional and original Christmas songs, including carols sung in Gaelic and French. The question for this CD is this: two days ago, on December 21st, the tenth aniversary of a tragedy was marked, involving in particular, three countries. Tell me the tragedy, and the three countries involved, and you'll get this CD, Songs for Midwinter, by the Poor Claires. The phone lines are open, 1-800-839-6771. That's 1-800-839-6771. The question once again is this: two days ago, on December 21st, the tenth aniversary of a tragedy was marked, involving in particular, three countries. Tell me the tragedy, and the three countries involved, and you'll have the CD. 1-800-839-6771. Here's a track from the Poor Claires Christmas album now - it's called I wonder as I Wander.

This is the Christmas edition of Simply Scottish, and I'm your host Andrew McDiarmid.

*** A few weeks ago, I contacted Pitlochry High School in Pitlochry, Scotland, a small, peaceful town nestled at the foot of the Scottish Highlands. I asked the principal, or head master, to send over some Christmas greetings and such from the students at the school. Well, what I got was charming, enjoyable, and very Scottish. Here are some of the greetings now, from the Primary 6 class, which is 5th grade in America, all the way from Pitlochry High School, in Scotland. ......until "personally, I like Mrs. Dobbins better.."

You're listening to the Simply Scottish Christmas Show, with Scottish Christmas music, greetings, stories, news and a chance to win some of your own Scottish Christmas CD's. Here now is Scottish singer Ann Williamson with "Santa Claus is coming to town"

That was Scottish singer Ann Williamson, with Santa Claus is coming to town.

I'm giving away two Scottish Christmas CD's tonight. I've given you the first question for the first CD - now here's your chance to win the second. This CD, called The night before a Celtic Christmas, features the Celtic group Dordan, with a joyous celebration of YuleTide magic. This CD can be yours if you answer correctly this question: First person to call with the correct answer gets "The night before a Celtic Christmas". The number to call is 1-800-839-6771. That's 1-800-839-6771. Here's music from the CD right now - Shades of Auld Lang Sine, on the Simply Scottish Christmas Special.

I'm sure you all are familiar with the beautiful Christmas Carol "Away in a manger". But did you know there were two tunes to it? In Scotland, the tune we sing to Away in a manger is quite different from the American version, although both are equally enjoyable. Tonight, I'm going to show you the Scottish version of the traditional carol Away in a manger. Here's Ann Williamson singing Away in a manger.

...until "and everybody from P6's - Merry Christmas.."

...until "a merry Christmas..in boston...bye.."

I'm Andrew McDiarmid, and I'm right here in Harlingen Texas, bringing you the Simply Scottish Christmas Special. Tonight, being it the day before Christmas Eve, my Dad is in the studio tonight, and he's going to talk about some Christmas Eve memories in Scotland. Before he does, however, I just want to remind all of you about the Christmas Eve Candlelight service at First Baptist Church in Harlingen tomorrow at 7pm, a short service of carols and candlelight - a chance to remember the real reason for Christmas - Jesus birth. If you would like to go with my family and I to this candlelight service, you can give me a call at 1-800-839-6771, and we'll set it up. Now, Dad, tell us a bit about your memories of Christmas Eves in Scotland.

***DAD***

Here now is a well loved carol, and one of my favorite Christmas Carols, In The Bleak Midwinter, performed by Bill Garden's Scottish Orchestra.

until..."and it's got lots of fresh air..."

You're listening to the Christmas edition of Simply Scottish, and that was a Celtic Christmas Hymn called Noel, performed in the ancient Celtic language of Breton, and sung by a French Choir in Brittany, France. Tonight's ryhme and reason brings to light a poem entitled Christmas Eve. In Scotland, Christmas Eve bids travellers to rest from their journey, to take shelter from the cold, and be welcomed into a warm home. It is a time for family, for reunion, and perhaps for remembrance of loved ones. But most of all, it is a joyous celebration with carols, tunes, songs, poetry, food, and drink. It is a time to recall how Joseph and Mary wandered the streets of Bethlehem in search of shelter on that holy night long ago.
