A Genuine American Hero, my friend, Larry Miller (Alabama)

Here are some pictures sent to me from Ab Quillian, a 371st bud. All of the pictures were taken at An Khe in 66-67 where Ab and I served together.

There are 25 pictures in all; Ab supplied the descriptions. Click on a photo of your choice for a stroll down memory lane, thanks to Ab (Ditty Bopper).

HongKong Mountain from the base camp

The base camp from Hong Kong Mountain. Guess where that smoke is coming from? Remember the poor guys who had the burn detail every day? And what they had to burn??!!

The tree line from a bunker on Hong Kong Mountain. One of the guard details we pulled on top of the mountain.

Thisis one of the Squad tents that we lived in in 66. This is looking back toward the hospital.

Another shot looking back toward the hospital.

Someone taking the short walk to the "tube." The latrine is on the right and the volleyball court on the left. This is looking back toward the golf course. Remember, we had one of these "tubes" up near the road as well.

Thisis looking back toward the golf course from the shower area. The brig is in the foreground. I don't remember any of us having to spend any time in those boxes!

Thisis looking toward DTOC. The Air Force had a group in the white buildings. Notice the movie screen. I can only remember watching one movie ~ "Von Ryan's Express" ~ we didn't see the end of the movie. Charlie decided to interrupt with a few mortar rounds on the golf course.

The famous shower and well. It was always tricky to gage the exact time when the water was just right. It was either too hot or too cold.

This was taken from the top of the bunker close to the creek area next to the road that ran beside the company area. The open space was used for choppers at times. Think that's the hospital in the background.

TheClub at Christmas. Many hours of fun, talks, letter- writing, letter-reading, cards, and a few cool ones now and then.

Thebar at the Club. Nothing more needs to be said. There was probably more talk here about home than anywhere else.

1stSgt. Cromely washing the dog, perhaps the most loved and misunderstood soldier in the unit. The dog, not Cromely. I can't identify the others.

Inside one of the squad tents that were placed on the concrete pads. I wish I could remember the names.

Celebrating Thanksgiving. That is Tubby Miller in the white shirt with the hat on. I (Ab) am the other one in a white shirt. I can't remember the other guys. The guy without the shirt was from the MI detachment. Note the stage of the buildings at this point.

This is the company area looking back at what was originally the mess hall and at this point became the orderly room. Hong Kong Mountain is in the background. Note the condition of the ground and the different levels of progress.

Another building going up.

Real progress is being made. The sidewalk is going in. At the upper end of the buildings is the Officer's tent. I remember shortly after the sidewalk was completed in that area Capt. Coonradt bouncing out of the tent one rainy morning and hitting the slick walk. He really did some bouncing. Do you think someone made that area slippery by accident?

Another shot of progress.

A shot inside of my barracks. I think we were the third one down.

Same barracks. I can't identify the guy. He worked the evening shift; was an 05h.

Thebarracks that housed the evening shift. Don't remember the names.

This is what things looked like in April 67. A lot of progress was made. The busy work probably kept some of us sane during that time.

Theday we left. Have fun trying to identify these guys.
