Mission: To help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-on-one relationships with measurable impact.

Population Served: At risk youth through age thirteen in Staunton, Waynesboro, and surrounding Augusta County. Caring adult volunteers are matched one-on-one with children to share experiences and develop positive outcomes. Through these relationships, youth develop in ways that will make them more likely to succeed as they transition into adulthood, and improve their chances for success.

Social Issues: Reducing the likelihood of drug and alcohol usage, school truancy, and engagement in violent behavior. Children who have positive mentoring relationships have shown a more positive attitude towards school, achieved higher grades, have higher levels of self-confidence, and are more likely to trust their teachers.

Volunteer Opportunities:
- Working directly with children as "bigs"
- Lunch Buddies

Location: Waynesboro, Staunton, and Augusta County; and any schools in those areas, public or private

Description: Volunteer opportunities include time spent one-on-one with child referred to as a “little." A screened volunteer mentor visits the assigned student once weekly during the school year, usually to eat lunch together. There is no time requirement outside of this hour each week, but the adult may call or write at other times.

Duration of Commitment: Typically a minimum of one or two hours per week for one year, one day each week during the school year.

Start or End Date: Depends on the task assigned to the volunteer. Usually begins in September when school starts but can begin anytime, September through May.

Operational Hours: Vary

Days of the Week Volunteers Needed:
- Monday through Sunday for “bigs”
- Monday through Friday for “lunch buddies”. They eat with the student during lunch at the school.

Volunteer Hours: Negotiable based on the availability of the volunteer. Because the organization commits to providing quality mentoring services to at risk youth in the community, it is imperative that volunteers follow through with agreed upon tasks within the agreed upon time frame. Must be available during the school day (usually lunch) and with some consideration for the teacher’s schedule

Looking for: Volunteers who are committed to improving the quality of lives for the children and families we serve.

Special Requirements: All volunteers must submit to a background investigation. The nature of the investigation will be discussed with the volunteer and will include, but will not be limited to: a criminal history investigation, child sexual abuse investigation, and Department of Motor Vehicle investigation.

We currently practice at the Waynesboro Parks and Recreation Department (Rosenwald Community Center) on Port Republic road in room eight. We have been offered the lower room of the public library, but transportation for the team is an obstacle.

Mission: We invite kids of all ages, races, and religions to come and show their talents in the art of stepping. Stepping is the stomping of the feet and clapping of the hands in rhythm and precision to create different beats. We instill pride (of self, heritage, and community), self esteem, respect, and dedication in our youth. We promote education. We teach that gang activity, drugs, alcohol, and premarital sex are avenues to self destruction. Our older youth are role models and mentors to the younger children.

Stepping is done mostly on the college level in fraternities and sororities. We are giving kids a stepping stone to a college future and with the help of our community, the possibility of higher education (which is something most of these kids would otherwise not be able to achieve).

We would like to become a non-profit organization so that we will be eligible for grants.

Population Served: Youth and children ages two and up

Social Issues: Education, abstinence, and a drug/alcohol/gang free lifestyle.

Volunteer Opportunities:
- Coach or Sponsor
- Providers of uniforms which include shoes, pants, shirts, sweatshirts, and jackets
They cost around $50 to $100 per child; and there are currently over twenty-five children participating.
- Transportation providers to and from shows, practices, and competitions
- Stereo equipment and props

Location: Waynesboro and the surrounding communities

Description: Because of the size of our group, we need adults to help supervise the children. We need coaches to teach step and dance routines. We are in desperate need of sponsorship to provide transportation, uniforms, and other needs to enable the team to compete.

Duration of Commitment: Varies

Start or End Date: We practice September through June

Operational Hours: Evenings

Days of the Week Volunteers Needed: Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM

Volunteer Hours: Very flexible. The children decide the pace of the practices.

Looking for: Creative, fun, and energetic people who love children (and do not mind loud noise).

Special requirements: None!
