How to apply

The first step is to contact the NSW department of Educatio. Their website has a detailed application process. You will need access to a printer or scanner to send through identification and qualifications..

On this form you will need to specify all previous teaching experience and you will need proof of these details.

Approval to work as a casual, temporary or permanent teacher in NSW public schools involves:

formal assessment of academic qualifications to ensure requirements are met;
assessment of personal suitability through attendance at an interview with a senior Departmental officer;
a criminal record check; and
an English language proficiency test for applicants who have obtained the majority of their qualifications in a country where English is not the main language.

In addition, all new scheme teachers (those first employed in a NSW school during or after term four 2004, or who are returning to teaching during or after term four after a break of five years or more) will need to apply to the NSW Institute of Teachers for eligibility for accreditation

After submitting your online application, your supporting documentation should be forwarded to: teach.NSW, Locked Bag 3003 Blacktown NSW 2148.

If you are a new scheme teacher, you can apply for employment with the Department and for an assessment of eligibility for accreditation with the NSW Institute of Teachers simultaneously. You need accrediation with both to teach in NSW.

If these are successful you will be asked to attend a 2 day familiarisation course in Sydney then attand a school for 3-5 days to be assessed against NSW standards. These courses are run monthly in Blacktown. Western Sydney are are to be completed at your own expense.
