The Nittany Lion
The Nittany Lion became Penn State's mascot in 1904. A man named Harrison D. Mason decided that in order to beat the
Princeton Bengal tigers in a baseball game, Penn State needed a fierce mascot.
The Nittany Lion's beat the Bengal tiger's that day and adopted a mascot that has represented
Penn State for over a century.
The Nittany Lion is essentially a mountain lion.
It is an animal that has roamed the Pennsylvania mountains until the 1880's.
Putting Nittany in front of the Lion, created a unique mascot that no other school could copy or compete against.
The pictures above are of my friend Aaron who is the backup Nittany Lion. He endured a time-consuming and rigorous competition for the coveted title.
Unfortunately, he has yet to transform into the Lion for a home football game.
Luckily, Penn State fans can still count on Aaron's energy and expertise since he dons the Lion suit for basketball and volleyball games.
