ORIGIN OF THE VIRUSES |

Where It Began: The Ebola Virus – 1930/1976 |

The Ebola Virus was first diagnosed by the American CDC (Center for Disease Control) in 1976. The Ebola Virus was named after a river in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly known as Zaire), and is believed to have sprung from the bodies of primates. It is natively only to Africa, though it has been transported to other continents via humans. While it is possible to carry the disease, there is no “carrier state” where the virus lies dormant. Ebola incubation in humans ranges from two to twenty-one days, but once the virus becomes active, suffering is acute. Symptoms include fever, headache, joint and muscle aches and sore throat. Secondary symptoms include weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain. Some patients suffer a rash, red eyes, hiccups and internal and external bleeding. The spread of the virus can be prevented though viral isolation techniques, and the use of goggles, gloves and sterilized equipment. Those infected will see their body tissue degrade within ten days. There is no known cure. |

One Step Closer: The Mother Virus – Date Unrecorded, Circa 1930 |

The Mother Virus, created by Oswell Spencer and Edward Ashford in the early 20th century, paved the way for the T-Virus and the Umbrella’s entire arsenal of bio-weaponry. The Mother Virus, though it had tremendous destructive potential, was relatively harmless at this point. The Mother Virus was created by Spencer and Ashford after genetically engineering the Ebola Virus – almost fifty years before the CDC discovered the Ebola Virus in Africa. Unsatisfied with the Ebola Virus’s 90% infection rate, their attempts to engineer a virus with a 100% infection rate led to the Mother Virus. |

The Progenitor Virus - 1976 |

The Progenitor Virus was James Marcus’s modification of the original Mother Virus. Though Marcus was relatively uninterested in the Mother Virus, when his relationship with Lord Spencer became strained, he threw himself into his work to create something unquestioningly positive for Umbrella, thus cementing his position within the company. It was this fascination with the Progenitor Virus which led to the creation of the T-Virus. |

The Tyrant (T) Virus – 1977 |

Umbrella researchers combines the 'Mother Virus,' now codenamed 'Progenitor' by both Spencer and the late Alexander Ashford with mutated leech DNA to create the top-of-the-line Biological-Weapons known as the Tyrant-virus, or T-virus for short. Injecting the T-virus into four leeches. Documents that their will to survive leads them first to parasitism and predation, then they breed and multiply. Such single minded biology makes them attractive candidates for bio-weapons research. Seven days pass since the injection of the T-virus in the leeches. The leeches' rapid growth and the increase in their numbers. He also notes that they resort to cannibalism, due to their 'ravenous appetites.' The Tyrant Virus was discovered that it remains liquid until it hits the air where it then becomes a gas. After three hours approximately the airborne virus becomes dormant as infection further spreads through blood or bodily fluid transfusion. Contact with the virus in any stage may cause severe infection, As living, the infection will start causing itching, perspiration, nausea, fever, in some cases bleeding, blisters, loss of memory, rotting and decaying flesh, peeling flesh at the simplest of touches, loss of function, loss of consciousness, and with in hours death. In death the virus rejuvenates the cells and optical firing in the brain, causing the dead to return with the simplest of functions, little to no memory and the basic need. The Need to feed. As a straight injection, the Tyrant Virus attaches itself to the blood cells, changing DNA strands and causing mutations and comatose. In this stage, the virus takes over the body as well creating a biological weapon. In slow dosage, the virus, in check can strengthen normally functions from power to speed, however in high dosage, mutation or death is possible. However, very few could survive with the T-Virus inside them; most turn into Zombies. Only 1 of every 10,000 people in the United States have the correct DNA to become a Tyrant, the following 9,999 would become the undead. A T-Virus leak shuts down the Arklay Laboratories basement area which in turn causes the spread of contamination into the Spencer Mansion, causing the outbreak of the T-Virus. From this stage, Birds and Dogs along with a few survivors and dead bodies brought back to Raccoon City spread this virus strictly through transfusions. |

This is another Virus that was created by Umbrella. But this time, but the Top-Heads of Umbrella... The Ashfords! The third and most powerful virus to this date would be created by a young thirteen year old girl named Alexia Ashford, Created by taking the DNA that was found in a Queen Ant and splicing it with the T-Virus, they managed to create a more powerful virus, the T-Veronica Virus. From this virus there is no known cure, as well as it is said to be three times as strong as both the T and G Virus through spreading and strength. This deadly Virus is known for it's superiority to the others as well as the lack of data on this experiment. It is known the Ashford twins have used this virus on a few people, including Alexia herself. |

Lisa Trevor’s Contribution: The Genome (G)-Virus – 1988 |

Eleven years after the creation of the
T-Virus, came
the birth of the next step. The
Genome Virus is a mutagenic toxin for the creation of BOWs
(Bio-Organic Weapons). It similar to the Tyrant Virus, but has a lot
more potential. It was created by William Birkin, a high ranked
researcher for Umbrella Inc., a pharmaceutical company which also has
its hands in the creation of BOWs. Lets take a test subject, example,
a human. Once injected, the subject will lose consciousness and his
interior body parts will start to change. The virus cells will take
control or as I like to put it, "hijack" the body. When the
subject wakes up, he will lose most of his memory, and lose the rest
over a period of time. His skin will start to rot and all of his
emotions will be destroyed. This is followed by normal human sickness,

"Las Plagas" Parasite - ???? (Thanks to www.tadpeters.com) |
|
|
? ? ? ? |
The Las Plagas isn't really a virus. It's a parasite controlled by a father host, a man named Osmund Saddler. He controls all parasites that have entered anything they come across. From regular humans to dogs and humans that have been impaired to become large or have unique qualities about them such as regenerating lost body parts. This certain "virus" does not have anything to do with Umbrella manufacturing and is a long-lost plague that has been locked away for centuries, but was released from the castle on this European island when the castle overseer was tricked into releasing it into the world once again. Coincidentally, Umbrella does arrive on the scene in the form of Ada Wong, Albert Wesker and Jack Krauser. Wong is there to retrieve a sample of the plagas to bring back to Umbrella, while Wesker and Jack Krauser are there to get it to the company that rivals Umbrella. With Leon Kennedy caught in the middle, on his own quest to rescue the president's daughter from being implanted with one of the parasites and shipped back to the United States, Leon manages to get through Saddler's legions of parasites and pawns he uses to rescue Ashley Graham, the president's daughter and remove the parasite from her while leaving this small island before it explodes. Of course, Ada Wong finds a sneaky way to leave the island via way of helicopter. The plagas issue is now resolved with the father host, Saddler, being destroyed. |
