Cool Face, Heart of Fire

The name of this site is more or less a reflection of Nereus's personality. Usually he sports a cool exterior, but it doesn't take a whole lot to annoy him. His temper isn't as blatant as it is with the female characters in the party (i.e Rumea and Shizuka), but it's nonetheless there.

He's also a pyromancer whose name means "water." To tell you the truth, that was completely unintentional (I just liked the name), but if I can make it make sense I will.

The Roots

On the outside, Nereus is an overconfident prick. He knows what he's doing and knows how to do it. Other characters may not like him very much, but he's a good guy to have around when you're completely clueless and need direction. He'll gladly order you about and insult you when you make a blunder. In addition to that, his self-confidence rarely gets in the way of logical thinking. He'll retreat when he's outmatched, no matter how highly he may think of himself.

Unbeknowst to everyone, Nereus doesn't think he's the coolest thing since sharpened pencils. He just believes most people would sooner die than think. Most of his misery and bitterness stems from his refusal to forgive himself rather than his refusal to forgive others. He feels he's partly responsible for the tragedies that have befallen the rest of his family and diligently works to correct them in any way he can. Personal reflection made him realize he was selfish and too idealistic when he was younger (at least in his opinion) -- the cause of much unneeded pain to both himself and to those he loves -- so he has since strived to become the complete opposite of how he once was. He was once an adventurous little boy who blocked out the dark side of reality and recklessly pursued his dreams, now he is a studious young man who acknowledges the dark side of reality (perhaps a little too much) and cautiously works on fixing what he screwed up in the past rather than doing what he wants. Not an entirely negative transformation, but neither is the former. Occasionally he finds himself wishing he could enjoy the stupid, uncomplicated happiness so many others around him indulge in, but he insists on staying on course...

And so when others are selfish, stupid, or just plain annoying they're likely to get a tongue lashing when Nereus is present. Other things also hit a nerve, but those instances are few and far in between.

He's a perfectionist to some extent. He doesn't expect everything to go flawlessly, but he has a tendency to dwell on failures (especially personal ones). You can try to cheer him up, but it's gotten so routine that he's likely to effortlessly provide a counterargument. He's not at peace until he "fixes" his mistake. He's gotten so wrapped up in fixing the past that he no longer knows what he wants for the future.

Nereus's biggest fear is losing his sister, hands down. One of the greater forces behind his life is the need to restore her body and health. Why? Because it's the nice brotherly thing to do and it makes amens for his failure to protect her like he promised his mother. Having her killed would destroy a good part of him and his primary motivation in life (reminding him of his inability to protect the people he loves, again). Curing himself of his berserker curse and taking care of the Cult of the Dead Serpent are important but secondary missions. Finding the source of the fog is simply part of the job he was given, not a quest with any personal value invested in it (at least as far as he knows).

Nereus is a loner. Does that mean he's lonely? Certainly, but he likes to claim it is the result of his "independent thinking." It is partly that, but he knows it's also because people don't understand him and he doesn't necessarily help. Socializing was never one of his strong suits, even if he's more articulate than most people. He just doesn't think there's a way to make his feelings and beliefs easily translatable, so he doesn't bother trying unless he needs to. He also knows getting too close to the wrong people would make him open to manipulation and blackmail, and he'd rather not have that fatal chink in his armor. Allies are good to have at times, but they're not always necessary. He is capable of opening up to certain people (namely the ones in the family section), but it often takes years to accomplish.

If you metagame and suddenly your character acts like they have known Nereus for their entire lives, I'll murder you with a spork.

What's in a name...

This site has a tendency to give eerily accurate name analysises. I ran Nereus in and this is what I got. Take into consideration all I just said (written prior to trying this out) and be prepared to blink.

Although the name Nereus creates the urge to be both logical and technical, we emphasize that it causes a blunt expression that alienates others. This name, when combined with the last name, can frustrate happiness, contentment, and success, as well as cause health weaknesses in the elimination system, and tension or accidents to the head.

The name of Nereus indicates you are a diligent and persevering worker who enjoys a routine occupation where you can do a job well and finish what you start. You like to work at your own speed, without pressure, as you prefer to take your time to work step by step in your own way. You could become frustrated and thwarted in your efforts if too many changes or disruptions occur. Also, you do not appreciate people enforcing new methods or ideas on you, as you like to examine all the details before making changes.
