Nereus has an... interesting family (or families). Most of these people aren't biologically related to Nereus, but he nonetheless considers them a part of his background. They're NPCs, for the most part, but are available for play as long as you contact me. Lenwë Lissësúl Nereus's father and a learned summoner. Nereus clearly inherited his magic skill from his father. He was exiled from his clan for accidently fatally wounding the chief's son in a shuffle concerning who was the victor in a silly card game. In order to fit into human society and partly due to his self-consciousness, Lenwë lopped off his pointy elf ears and adopted "Percival" as his last name. Soon after his exile he meets an attractive human woman who offers him her residence. They eventually fall in love and wed five years later and Nereus was born two years after. Nereus and Lenwë has a close relationship, although it wasn't your typical father-son bond since Lenwë lacked the self-esteem and confidence most father figures have. Instead it was more of a brother - brother bond, with Nereus being the more overwhelming of the two. Lenwë was very pleased and proud that his son was interested in sorcery, which added friction between him and Narnia. Lenwë encouraged Nereus to follow his bliss regardless of the circumstances. It sounded good in theory, but it obviously didn't work... well, not entirely. He was thought to be killed when The Cult of The Dead Serpent (CoTD) paid a visit to their family cottage, but his body was never recovered. Nonetheless, there is an empty grave for him in Tei's main cemetery. Nereus, along with everyone else, believes his father to be dead in spite of this. After all, if he were still alive, he would have came back... Narnia Truvale Nereus's beloved mother. She allowed Lenwë to take refuge in her cottage and inevitably fell in love with the elf guy. She owned a taffy shop and provided the family's meager income, which resulted much frustration within the marriage because of Lenwë's intense social anxiety which prevented him from actually getting a paying job. Nereus and his mother didn't get along often, but he was actually closer to his mother. After realizing Lenwë was incapable of providing the bread, Narnia wanted Nereus to help take care of the family in case her disease killed her prematurely. A career in sorcery would not pay the bills. At least not immediately. A career as a lawyer, doctor, or businessman would. To Narnia, becoming a mage was the equivalent of becoming a starving artist: you only get paid when you become exceptionally good at it, and that takes the greater half of a lifetime to achieve. It was important that Nereus developed the skills needed in these sort of professions at school. As fate may have it Nereus turned out to be a terrible student and often neglected his studies in exchange for his father's ancient magic tomes. Nereida fared well in school, but she was a girl, and so had less opportunity for a high-paying job. This infuriated Narnia to no end and resulted in heated arguments with both her husband and son. Narnia feared for the welfare of her family, and Nereus was frustrated with this enormous responsibility that was being continually heaped onto his shoulders. It didn't help that Nereida was being encouraged to become a cleric; something he saw as hypocritical even as a child. Narnia injured herself internally and died the day before Nereus's birthday. Since then Nereus has regarded his birthday as a bittersweet occasion. It almost reminds him of how much of a disappointment he was as a son and he deeply regrets some of the things he said to his mother. He can now see where she was coming from. Ironically, however, Nereus has managed to find a career in sorcery... so at the same time he can't entirely agree with her. Nereida Percival Perhaps Nereus's most loyal childhood companion and little sister. While her sorcery was never as astounding as her older brothers, Nereida excelled in her academics wherein Nereus faltered. They were opposites in personality -- Nereida was usually too polite to engage in an argument with anyone. Since her encounter with the Cult of the Dead Serpent, however, this is now so far from the truth. She was studying to become a cleric when CoTD attacked their dwelling and left her body too scalded for her to survive, but Nereus returned in time to retrieve her soul and lock it in his sword's core crystal before she passed on. She now makes no bones about letting others know what's on her mind - and by others, the author means Nereus himself. Nereida never loses sight of an opportunity to be condescending and sarcastic towards her brother, reminding him of any small mistake he makes. Nereus loves his sister dearly in spite of her dramatic personality change. He can't really blame her. Like with most of the tragedies that have occurred in Nereus's short life, he believes he's partly responsible for it. Since his mother's abrupt death he has taken it upon himself to be Nereida's protector when things went wrong, seeing how his father couldn't be. He failed in that. Nereida's constant nitpicking and put-downs does not remedy the guilt. She means well, but there have been sweeter and more affectionate ways of showing it. Nereida is being played by Soja. Calvin Stiles The Recruitment Officer for the world-famous Magisters, and temporarily served as Nereus's adoptive legal guardian. Calvin took interest in Nereus when he was visiting the orphanage and took him in after that didn't work out. In some ways, Calvin is more of a father to Nereus than his actual father was. Nereus learned out to utilize his sword more effectively with Calvin's aid (he's a master swordsman at the Gourry / Zangulus level) and managed to pass the Magister exam with his guidance. Calvin is the only person aside from Nereida who knows about Nereus's Demon Fever, and in turn Nereus is the only one who knows Calvin is also a vampire. Because they both have dark secrets that could get them into some pretty deep crap, they empathize more with each other than with most other people. Even though Nereus is now an adult, Calvin still remains a large presence in his life. He watches out for Nereus, teases him, and provides whatever comfort he can. It may grate on his nerves from time to time, but Nereus has found himself grateful for it on more than one ocassion. Calvin is being played by Blank. Rosalyn Lovell Aunt Rosalyn was a close family friend of Narnia and often babysat Nereus and Nereida when they were young. She's in her mid-eighties but maintains her energy well. Her son, Carver, is currently serving the military. Paisley is technically her grandson, but she took him in after it was decided that her daughter -- his mother -- was too emotionally unstable to take care of him. Rosalyn is still apt to take care of Nereus and Paisley as if they were her sons. Nereus still visits the Lovell residence on the Holy Day for dinner. Paisley Lovell Kendra's estranged son, Rosalyn's grandson and Nereus's childhood friend. Paisley has successfully become a cleric at a temple dedicated to Meiphied, although he's still greatly disappointed that Nereida was unable to join him (he had a bit of a crush on her). He's two years younger than Nereus and they grew up together. Paisley has returned to the Lovell residence to look over his grandmother while Carver is off to war, fearing for the woman's physical and emotional health. Paisley is the complete opposite of Nereus in temperment: he's compassionate, empathetic, meek, and mild-tempered. Because he didn't walk or talk like other boys he often found himself being mocked and alienated by his peers during his childhood. He has noticed the transformation in Nereus and is not entirely at ease with it, even after all these years... he misses his best friend... | |
