The Shadows are a group of well-trained assassins,
thieves who have survived long enough to move on to a
different trade. Most of them have "graduated" from
the Guild of the Light Hand, the Thieves' Guild. When
one grows skilled enough, they are brought to a secret
location and shown the hidden rites of the guild. They
receive the tattoo of the Shadow's guild, and are
inducted into the ranks of The Shadows.
The Shadow secretly control the Guild of the Light Hand, running the workings of the Light Hand from the-- Shadows, as it just so happens.
When one first joins, they are a Half-Light, showing that they are still becoming adjusted to their art and new position. They gain a well-made dagger with the Guild's sign on the hilt-guard. When they have bloodied this dagger working for the guild-- note that the jobs given out by the Shadows are very difficult, so failure usually results in death, at best, then they move to the next rank.
A Shadow is the next step up, having adjusted to the life of the assassin. They gain a new dagger, one enchanted with a spell of poison-- the blade is always filled with a poison that causes great pain in the wound. The great thing about the enchanted blade, is that the assassin using it can never get poisoned by it accidently. They use this in their next missions for the guild.
When they have shown surpassing loyalty to the guild and great skill, by completing five missions, they are tested to be a Shade. The testing is of their own initiation, but they only have one chance. If they fail, they are stuck forever as a Shadow. This is nothing to be taken lightly. If they succeed however, their dagger is enhanced and given a sister blade. The poison grows more powerful, the pain is maddening. Also, paralysis sets in after the poison flows through the bloodstream. And the final enhancement is that the daggers thrown will teleport back to the wielder's hand after it hits.
Grand Shades are the highest order in the guild, the greatest assassins who live. They must have completed ten or more missions for the guild, and mastered the art of assassination. When they have reached this rank, they gain the complete trust of the Guild, and their daggers gain the power of growing into long swords, but are still as light and easily used as a dagger. They must speak a command word and flick their wrists to elongate the swords, and speak the opposite of the command word, and snap their wrists in.
The guildmaster is shrouded in mystery, his name entrusted only to the highest ranking and most trusted members of the guild, his presence only graced upon the special occasions and great rites. All is known is that he is a deadly warrior, a wizard with his knives, and extremely efficient.
