There are three groups in the battle command bar: An impulse, a main and a sub group.
Attacks are just a standard hit with the characters weapon. Characters can perform a sequence of three hits for their attack. Also three airborne attacks.
Special are learnt throughout the game. They cost MP but are very effective. Specials do not have their own gauge and can be used at will like the standard attack.
You can also learn different combos. When in battle you can select combo, the character charges and time stops. You then have to input a particular code, such as:
up, circle, triangle, down, down, square
When this is completed successfully, the player attacks with a number of hits. If not completed in the given time or if the wrong buttons are pressed the players gauge starts again.
Every character has a particular magic assigned to them. E.g. Sabat=Lightning. That character can use only that magic. This brings a certain tactic to the game. Only Chi-Chi can wield all types of magic though it will still be not as effective as the certain characters as that character can get four magic levels Chi-Chi can only get three from all of them.
Items can be used for curing or reviving. They are mainly used if white magic is unavailable. Also items can be used to open doors and such. To go back to Battle System Click here
