News From Abroad

The plant for manufacturing these Human Transporters will produce its first devices for commercial use in the late 2002. It s expected that the initial production capacity will be 40 000 per month. But will Kamen win the hearts of Americans for his new transporter (with a cost of $3 000) or his revolutionary invention will benefit other nations with priority?

What is the main purpose of the Human Transporter? To help individuals travel more effectively in short distances (less than 10 km. or 6 mi.). Where is it possible? Only within the cities, where the conventional cars even the smallest models are considered to be too big, too noisy, too dirty and too ineffective compared to let say the bicycles.

I don t remember to have seen in any major American city many people going to work riding bicycles. Why? This is because the bicycles are too dangerous for the pedestrians on the sidewalks and too unsafe for riders on the roads. The new device eliminates these problems. You can "ride" on the sidewalks safely for you and for other people.

But will Americans appreciate this invention given the fact that the whole society has been organized on the dependence of the cars? Everything in the USA can be reached with a car and many things only with a car. There is simply no other option. Dean Kamen wants to change all this, to change the way people travel, the way people go shopping, the way if you want the people live and enjoy their leisure time. More mobile people with less spacious transport devices will mean less care about building garages and traffic jam-free and less noisy city centers. This indeed could change everything, from the investment priorities to the way people travel within their own companies.

I m afraid that for the Americans to adapt for this new mentality could take some time. On the other hand some nations in Europe are ready even today to embrace this transporter. Many small and middle-sized towns in Belgium, Netherlands and Germany know mainly the bicycles as main inner city transport vehicle. For them changing the bicycles for Human Transporter will be much easier than for the Americans to change the cars for the two-wheeled devices.

There are many more reasons why some sections of Europe could take a lead in adopting this new mean of transportation for short distances. European societies are very sensitive for the air pollution problems and for the noisy car engines. In Europe the taxes on gas are higher than in the USA and the price of the fuel is twice that in America. Thus the "Segway" in Europe will mean not only to travel faster, but also to travel cheaper. When it comes to new ecological devices European countries are keener than the American states of giving financial stimulus for costumers. That means that if the "Segway" in the USA costs $3 000, in Europe it may cost less.

In other words, the new transport vehicle will inevitably change our lives and bring major changes in the way we travel, work and live. But this won t be made with the same speed in all the industrialized countries. The "Segway" was invented in the USA, but in the coming years I suppose that it will have more passionate customers in Europe.
