The Bonded Fortress

The Fortress stands on a cliff beside the sea, with a large river running beside it. It was hewn from a live volcano, tamed by magic and engineering. The walls rise high over anyone who wishes to enter, standing several feet thick. Its defenses are second to none. People from all over the realm travel here to try their luck at bonding to one of four potential lifemates; dragons, hippogryphs, gryphons, and pegasii.
All these types have two things in common – females are rare and clutches aren’t that frequent. In dragons, only the current dragon commander has a female. Gryphons also have only a few females but they tend to have smaller, more frequent clutches. Hippogriffs are the same as gryphons only their clutches are rarer. Pegasi have trouble conceiving but most are female and will lay one or two eggs each time. When eggs (of any species) are laid, they are laid in the Hatching Cavern. It’s not uncommon for three or four mothers to be tending a clutch and candidates are assumed to be standing for all current clutches.
The Fortress itself is run by five commanders, including a High Commander, who oversee the bonding and necesseties of their particular group. Commanders are usually bonded to the females of each species, excluding the pegasii who have a herd stallion.
