Following the success of the RX-78-2 Gundam and the V Project, Federal design teams kickstarted a large number of specialized mobile suit designs for field testing, to further experiment with the potential uses of mobile suits in real combat scenarios.

One of these designs was the RX-78XX Gundam Pixie, designed for high speed, close range combat. Using the original RX-78-2's frame, the XX had a good amount of armor stripped away, reducing weight by approx. 20 tons. Additional armor plates were installed on the back of each arm to prevent necessity of a shield, allowing for a further drop in gross weight. Then, the beam sabers were repositioned to racks in the hips and redesigned into beam knifes, for use in extreme close quarters. Finally, the feet and backpack were redesigned completely, allowing for a much greater thruster capacity. A higher output reactor was then installed to facilitate these thrusters.

The newfound Gundam "Pixie" was not nearly as invincible as the original Gundam, or even the Gundam Massed Production Ground Type, but was considerably lighter, able to outmaneuver Duchy Goufs in close quarters. A short ranged machinegun was designed for the unit with a very large clip, to reduce the need of extra weight from spare cartridges. However, the unit could still be armed with a beam rifle for long range combat. The end result was an extremely lightweight, mobile unit that still had more armor than any Duchy suit at the time.

The Pixie was assigned to Federal ace Jet Kurasame at Honolulu Base, where it was prepped for field testing just prior to Operation Odessa.

Beam Knives. Smaller for combat where both are used simultaniously, they work best in extreme close quarters.

Beam Rifle. Smaller than the original Gundams but lacking any kind of scope, this model would later be used for the RX-78 NT-1 Alex. .

Grenade. Using an identical design as Duchy grenades, the Pixie is able to quickly pick up and prime grenades from enemy units without any trouble.

Some people think that Jet was given this assignment specifically as a joke - Two of the members of her narcotics offense tribunal recommended her for the position.
