"The halls of St. Augustine were always bustling with life, until the black plague hit. Sickness permeated the region, the grand cathedral lay abandoned, along with hope of a better future." |
The Foyer
Intricately carved marble statues adorn the pillars and walls of the entrance to the cathedral. The once elegant foyer, laden with sculptures and fountains which now lay dormant, ushers one farther into the obese monument.
Throughout the corridors and vaulted ceilings of the cathedral, detailed depictions of
biblical scenes are hand painted and leafed with gold.
From the outside, the structure appears to be solid, weathering the passage of time with grace and dignity. Wrought iron workings on the windows were typical of the time, keeping the holy sacraments and other items safe within the walls of the Cathedral.
The Sanctuary Inside of the main sanctuary, light filters in through an array of ornate windows. The ceilings are vaulted and made of sandstone, the pews are made of solid oak and have withstood the sands of time. Arches and pillar type structure was typical in the construction of such houses of worship.
The Gardens
Perhaps one of St. Augustine's most brilliant features, were the courtyards and gardens that adorned the west side of the massive structure. Remnants of the aviaries and pavilions still remain to this day, although many of the prominent statues have been defaced due to vandalism.
