So You Want To Be Invisible?

There are many ways you can go about it.

Invisibility Cloak
Invisibility Cloaks are very rare and very valuable. Finding one will not be an easy job for you. If you do have one (or can aquire one), however, they are simple to use. Very little magical prowess is required. Just make sure to keep yourself covered.

Amulets and Talismans
In order to use an amulet or talisman, some degree of magical ability is required. You must focus your mind toward unlocking the power of the amulet/talisman. It may take practice and patience. The good news is that in times of panic the amulet kicks in and works to protect you. Talismans take a bit more practice, but are easier to control once you learn how.

Invisibility - The Magical Skill
There are spells that allow wizards and witches to become invisible. They are very advance and will mentally and magically exhaust a person if used for extended periods of time. Once — if — mastered, however, they are more reliable than other means of invisibility. As long as the wizard or witch does not try to hold the spell for too long ("too long" depends on the circumstances and magical prowess of the subject), there should be no problem with it.

Alternate Invisibility - The Magical Skill
Sometimes an alternate means of invisibility is preferable to the typical you-can't-see-me invisibility. If you find yourself in a crowded area or with people searching for you, this method is preferable:

Instead of aiming for invisibility, aim for inconspicuousness. Aim to go unnoticed, not unseen.

There are spells that allow a witch or wizard to become inconspicuous, but they are difficult to achieve and maintain, even for those with exceptional magical talent. The reason behind this is not only because of the level of magic involved to fool those around the subject, but because of the careful mental balance the subject must keep. In fact, it is easier for a humble servant to keep this careful balance than it is for very powerful and important wizards and witches.

You see, the spell itself is not enough; the person must act inconspicuous. Strong emotions such as anger, joy, fear or sorrow will make the person stand out and render the spell useless. It is important for the subject to maintain an outward appearance of apathy, dullness, aridness, and general uninterest. A person displaying emotions will attract attention.

Please note, that becoming the "mysterious stranger" will not help either. An enigmatic individual is interesting. You must appear unworthy of attention in order for the spell to work.

You must become inconspicuous on your own. The spell can only intensify it to befuddle others and make them forget you are there—ignore you—nothing more.

Hiding
When all else fails, why don't you just spend time fine tuning your hiding skills? I am sure you have the potential. Now you need to work with it. No magical abilities required, although they help.

Note: I thought these things up. If anyone is planning to use these ideas, feel free, but I'd love it if you told me about it anyway. Thanks.
Note 2: Actually, the Alternate Invisivility was influenced, loosely, by two places: Phillip Pullman's Subtle Knife (I found the way Will got people to ignore him interesting) and the tactics Remus Lupin used in DMP's Harry Potter fan fiction, Wolf by Ears (great story, I recommend it).
