Why Hermione Granger is a Gryffindor
It's not just for the sake of plot.

There seem to be many people speculating on why Hermione is a Gryffindor when she seems the ideal Ravenclaw. Let me clear it up for everyone.

"Exactly, which makes you very different from Tom Riddle. It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."
--Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by JK Rowling
“Harry -- you’re a great wizard, you know.”
“I’m not as good as you,” said Harry, very embarrassed, as she let go of him.
“Me!” said Hermione. “Books! And cleverness! There are more important things -- friendship and bravery and . . .”
--Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone by JK Rowling

It all boils down to priorities and morals. Some Potterites speculate that Hermione may have simply asked the Sorting Hat to place her in Gryffindor, but it is not that simple. Although Hermione values her mind, she places more value on bravery. What one values most speaks volumes about one's character; Hermione belongs in Gryffindor.
