The Art of Divinations - An Explination
By I. Light (the Webmistress)

"Hasn't your experience with the Time-Turner taught you anything, Harry? The consequences of our actions are always so complicated, so diverse, that predicting the future is a very difficult business indeed..."
-Prof. Dumbledore [PoA, Chap. 22]

Some people think our destiny is writen in stone, others think predicting it is absurt because there is no way to tell which way the future will go, still more think true seers exist.

To truly understand divinations one must understand its connection with time and the power of choice. First of all, no one's destiny is writen in stone. That, however, doesn't mean that the future is completely unpredictable. True seers do exist, but they are very rare and are by no means always correct.

Imagine a table with food, plates, salt and pepper, glasses, and other miscellaneous objects. That is time. Imagine yourself as a little ant (or very small human, which ever you prefer) making its way across the giant table. You can choose your own path just as you can choose which way you lead your life. Sometimes a person, object, or circumstance may block your way and you will be forced to change directions.

Your way across the dinner table represents your life. During your journey, you may ("do," "will," and "have" also) come across obstacles. These obstacles will force you to change direction, as I said earlier. Exactly which direction you choose is up to you (something called "free will").

Divinations is the understanding that the objects on the table have been set before hand. A true seer is someone who has the ability to see patterns and estimate where a particular person is heading. Of course, for a seer to always be accurate, life would have to be devoid of choices. Luckily, it's not.
