What is introduced in the second book and used later?

• House Elves: They become important in GoF and OotP.
• Polyjuice Potion: It was introduced in CoS and used in a minor plot; it became essential to the plot of GoF.
• Expelliarmus: This spell is crucial in GoF's Harry-Voldemort duel.
• Dueling: See above. Harry needed to be introduced to dueling early on.

What information do we get in CoS that is not used for a major plot line later?
i.e. What lightly-used scraps could turn out to be treasure?

• The Sorting Hat has stuff in it. It's hard to believe that Godric Gryffindor's sword was the only thing protected by the Sorting Hat-- what else could it have?
• The Sorting Hat can speak. It knows stuff. It thinks. In OotP, this point was taken a baby step further with the new Sorting Song, but it might only be a foreshadowing of its future imporance.
• Polyjuice Potion can't be used with animal hair. This is a detail that could be used later, particularly with all the Animagi in the series.
• Tom Riddle's Diary: How was it made? With all the times we have been confronted with pensieves in the series, I cannot help but expect the concept of the diary to be used again. Somehow, someway...
• Tom Riddle's Diary: Lucius Malfoy has it.
• A description of the Slytherin common room: Did JKR have other reasons for showing it to us early on? It was in such a small scene and that subplot could have been cut if necessary, but it wasn't.
• The Dark Arts shop, Borgins and Burkes: We got a detailed description of its contents, particularly of the Hand of Glory; did you ever wonder why?
• Draco Malfoy mentions a secret chamber of Dark Arts stuff in his house. Ron says he's going to tell his father, but we never hear about it again in the series. What gives?
• Tom Riddle's name was on an old record of Medals for Magical Merit. How did he get that? Is it important? Note that this is not the same award he received for turning in Hagrid; that one was an Award for Special Services to the School.
