Space Wars

Space Wars is designed for small scale starship fights but can be used for large scale fights as well. The game design offers several optional rules to make combat more realistic and more powerful. All of the starships are completely made up although they may be based on starships from Star Wars or Star Trek but as of right now there are no direct translations from either.

Set-up

Game Set-Up varies with every battle but the basis for every battle is the same. Each combatant receives a number of points to purchase starships for their side. They then place their starships in the area that they control. Most pre-made battles will give the combatants certain ships. At the beginning of the game the players or person running the game must decide what the goal is.

Order of Events

First Player
1. Deploy
2. Move
3. Declare Attacks

Second Player
1. Deploy
2. Move
3. Declare Attacks

This continues until every player has had a turn to deploy and move. Then all attacks are resolved at the end of the round.

Deploy

At the beginning of each round a player receives a certain amount of points to bring in new starships as reinforcements. Deploy is only used in long battles or in long term campaigns.

Movement

The board can be any flat surface that you can use. The size of the surface doesn’t matter as long as you can move all your starships around. Each starship has a certain distance that it can move in a round. Ships can turn a certain number of times as stated in their description depending on their size. Generally the bigger the ship the less turns that it can make.

Combat

When two ships are within 4” of each other they are considered in combat and may fire upon each other using either normal or special weapons. Special Weapons are described in the Starship section. To determine if an attack hits both players roll D20 (Use 3D6 if you don’t have any D20) add any modifiers that apply.

A - means that the ship takes no damage from the attack. When a starship reaches 0 hull points it explodes. The size of the ship being shot at and its speed affects damage also, but that will be explained later in the starship section.

Winning

Every game has a different goal, but generally you will be attempting to destroy your opponents fleet before he destroys you. A battle may have different goals especially if you are playing a campaign like game. Generally you will have to destroy something to win the game.
Gameplay Modes

There are several ways to play Starship Wars. The most common way to play is battle because it is one quick fight and doesn’t take a long time to set-up. However if two players are really intrigued by the game they may start a campaign. The battle mode is explained in the beginning, the following outlines the way that a campaign runs.

Beginning
To start a campaign each player claims a certain number of planets that they control. The players can name a certain number of their planets as starship plants, generally about 2 or 3 planets are starship factories. The players start out with a larger number of points than in a battle and this becomes their entire fleet. A round is much more complex in a campaign because of all the possible actions. In a campaign each starship uses its second move value to move around the galaxy. If any starships move into a planet held by an opposing team a battle automatically starts although either side can retreat. All the actions in a campaign turn are the same as in a battle turn unless otherwise stated.

Turn

1. Deploy
2. Collect Taxes
3. Order Ships
4. Move
5. Draw Event Card

Repeat these steps for every player. At the end of all the turns all the battles are resolved as in the rules for a battle.

Collect Taxes

Each player gains 25 points for each planet he controls. These points are used to purchase new starships.

Order Ships

During the 3rd phase of your turn you may order new starships to be made at your factories. Each factory can produce up to five ships at a time but no more than that. When a starship is done being made it is placed on the planet it was made at and can move up to half of its move value.

Draw Event Card

This phase of the turn is optional, but it makes the game seem much more realistic. The event cards generally affect the amount of points that a person receives but a few may affect the ability of his starships.

Point of a Campaign

The basic point of running a campaign is just to immerse the players in a more detailed game and provide a point to the game. The campaign will usually revolve around a conflict for power. Usually you attempt to win all of your opponents planets and therefore gain control of the galaxy. That goal becomes more difficult with an increase in the number of players in the game.
