You walk in... you look around. Maybe you have been so lucky as to impress a dragon by now. Even a firelizard. As your eyes wander over everything in this room you are stunned by the beautiful pictures and murals of dragons, riders, firelizards, canines, tunnel snakes, dolphins, and more. You suddenly feel, rather then hear a voice behind you. As you turn around you see Areyeth and Quereth. The two great dragons that are bringing back the great creatures of Pern. You and whoever is with you quickly duck underneath a table, for you are not sure if you are allowed to be here or not.
As the two mighty dragons walk by it is obvious they are talking. You chuckle slightly, thinking of what you have considered all your life to be a dream, an inhabition. Suddenly you feel the urge to cough. You try to refrain yourself but are unable. So you cough and as the sound echos around the huge room Areyeth almost hisses and turns around quicker then you thought possible of a creature of her size.
Her golden head lowers and knocks the table over. You shake uncontrollably as her eyes, swirling a bright orange red combination look directly into yours. She snorts and brings her head back up. She speaks to you and you are VERY frightened. Why are you here? I would rather like to know. Quereth lowers his head directly in your face. If you are trying to steal the great Dragondex of Pern I will stop you. You quickly reassure the dragons that you are doing nothing of the sort, they seem to believe you. You slowly stand up and make a break for the entrance. Areyeth quickly puts her foot in front of you are stopped. I do not trust you. You look up into her eyes hoping for pity but find none.
Quereth snorts and the following conversation persued...
Quereth: I believe it will
be all right if we let the child read it.
Areyeth: What if he tries to
take it and run?
Quereth: He won't. If he has
any thing in his head, he won't.
Areyeth: All right, the child
may read it.
Areyeth stretches her neck and
she pulls down a thick book. It is titled "The Dragondex". You open
it and begin to read, not wanting to offend the dragons in any
way.
The Dragondex
A long time ago... in the Rukbat system a group of humans from the planet Earth came to Pern to see if it was suitable for a human colony. When they landed they found many things, including plants, such as numbweed. And also animals, such as Tunnel Snakes, Wherries, and Fire Lizards.
Tunnel Snakes are somewhat like the snake we think of today. However they have short legs on which they can slightly walk. They also prefer to live below the ground and feed on prey underneath the earth. Wherries are idiotic birds that do hunt but are better as hunted! Fire Lizards are small versions of the creatures we know and love... Dragons.
The Dragons were Bioenginnered by humans from Firelizards. They did this because they needed a larger more intelligent version of firelizards that could be ridden and would be smart. They reached this level of intelligence by using a metasynth enhancement...
