Final Fantasy IX, the ninth installment, is SQUARESOFT's last Final Fantasy for the PlayStation. The Final Fantasy series once again unleashes an enthralling saga of epic proportions with Final Fantasy IX. It brings back the traditional RPG elements [like armours] and is directed more towards a magical tale and fantasy style unlike the previous two more serious type Final Fantasies. Graphically, Final Fantasy IX doesn't show a quantum leap over Final Fantasy VIII. It seems that the Final Fantasy series has reached its peak in terms of 32-bit graphics at VIII. Final Fantasy IX uses similar graphic engine, just like Final Fantasy VIII and demonstrates the PlayStation technology to the fullest. The only noticeable difference is the inproportionate character design style by Yoshitaka Amano. 'Old' diehard FFs fans will definitely welcome Yoshitaka Amano's artworks. Nevertheless, Final Fantasy IX manages to maintain the standard set by Final Fantasy VIII graphically. Well, we can't complain too much since the PlayStation is getting 'old'. Final Fantasy IX lacks the innovations when you talk about combat, when being compared to the last few Final Fantasies, particularly VI to VIII. Analyse the combat system carefully and you will find that a lot of concepts are recycled and modified ideas in Final Fantasy IX. Well, this isn't really bad since I find that the concept behind the combat system like Trance, learning abilities etc, are very easy to grasp. Despite all these, Final Fantasy IX is definitely a great RPG for everyone. One particular sidequest captures my attention fully. As you can guess, it's the chocobo digging game. The chocobo digging game, known as the 'Chocobo Hot and Cold' game, [Why is it 'Hot' and Cold'? There must be a reason!!!] is a complex and enjoyable game to play. In Final Fantasy VII, we spent time breeding gold chocobo, just to get Knight of the Rounds Materia. I complain that we should be given more treasures to find that requires chocobo. Square has granted my wish. With all these said, I shall proceed on to the faq. You should see a 'round-shaped' forest. Yes, it is the Chocobo's Forest and where your first Chocobo's Hot and Cold game will begin. You meet Mene, a moogle. Mene will give you a Gysahl Green and tell you that this is the favourite food for chocobo. You need the Gysahl Green to summon a chocobo. Now, exit the forest and get ready to call your first chocobo. Steps ----- Here's the steps you need to know to call Choco: 1)Notice that there are tracks just outside the Chocobo's Forest. 2)Go to the tracks and go to the menu. Use a Gysahl Green. You will notice that a KWEH sound is heard. 3)Chocobo appears in the world map. 4)Ride the chocobo by pressing the X button. 5)Enter the Chocobo's Forest. The chocobo's default name is Choco. Mene said that a chocobo will never leave his master if he is being taken care of. Talk to Mene, the Moogle and ask him for the secret. Mene will tell you that chocobo is born with a special ability that allows it to detect treasures and dig treasures that are buried deep in the ground. Mene said that he can't ride the chocobo himself. By giving 60 gil to Mene, Mene will give you one minute [60 secs] to let you use Choco to dig up the treasures here in the Chocobo's Forest. Any treasure you find, will be BELONGED to YOU. You earn points for finding treasures. The better the treasures, the more points you will earn. You can accumulate your points and exchange points for some good items. After you have paid 60 gil to Mene to play the Chocobo's Hot and Cold Game, you will see a list of instructions of how you should play the game. [All in caps] sound, it means you have struck the spot where item is buried. A depth level meter will appear, indicating how deep the treasure is being buried underground. The deeper the item is buried, there is a tendency that it will be a better item, but of course, more time is needed to dig out the buried treasure. For example, the initial depth meter is 70. Keep pressing the Square button and you will notice that the depth meter starts to decrease at a certain rate. When it reaches ZERO, you will receive the buried item. How fast the depth meter decreases will depend on Choco's beak level. The higher the beak level, the faster the depth meter decreases. As Choco keeps digging and gains points, Choco's beak level will increase. By now, these are the points that you should take note of: --------------------------------------------------------- 1)If you need more Gysahl Greens, you can purchase it from Mene for 80 gil each. You can also find Gysahl Greens sometimes when you are playing the Chocobo's Hot and Cold game. 2)You can call Choco on the world map, provided that you are STANDING on chocobo tracks by using the Gysahl Green. What makes it difference from Final Fantasy VII is that you do not need to enter a battle and defeat all the enemies to get a chocobo. 3)To ride Choco, press X button and to dismount, press the Circle button. What makes it difference from Final Fantasy VII is that Choco will never run away even if you get off Choco. 4)Choco will always stay in a FIXED location where you last leave him unless you use a Gysahl Green to call him from another location which has chocobo tracks. For example, you leave Choco just outside Alexandria. Then, you go to the tracks near Chocobo's Forest and use a Gysahl Green. You will notice that Choco will not be outside Alexandria anymore. Instead, Choco will be outside the Chocobo's Forest. 5)You can talk to Mene to see how many points you have accumulated. You can exchange points for items. Examples of great items that you can get by exchanging a certain points are Robe of Lords and Protect Ring. 6)The deeper the item is buried, there is a tendency that it will be a better item, but of course, more time is needed to dig out the buried treasure. 7)Choco's beak level increases as Choco keeps digging and gains points. Digging becomes easier if Choco's beak level is high. Certain treasures appear at certain beak level. 8)The noises, as listed in table 1, also applies when you ride Choco in the world map to dig for treasures, when a Chocograph is being equipped. [Please refer to 'What's Chocograph?' section for more details.] 9)At each time, there will only be ONE treasure. Once you have found it, another treasure will be SET IN PLACE. The MAXIMUM number of treasures you can find per game is EIGHT. [The ONLY EXCEPTION is digging in Chocobo's Lagoon before getting the Ocean Ability. In this case, the MAXIMUM number of treasures you can find per game is FOUR.] Why 'Hot' and 'Cold' game?: ========================== The information below are contributed by and . There is an old and popular game in the US and maybe in other parts of the world. The idea of the game is that someone hides an item and the other player attempts to find it. If the player gets closer to the item, the player who hides the item will say this to the player, "You are getting hotter." If the player gets further away from the item, the player who hides the item will say, "You are getting colder." And, if the player is very close to the item, the hider will then say, "You are very hot!". Similarly, the chocobo reacts in the same manner by making noises like Kweh, Kweh!? etc. ======================================================================= III)What's Chocographs? ======================================================================= There are special items buried deep beneath the ground that provides clues as to the whereabouts of buried treasure that Choco can dig up on the World Map, known as the Chocographs. Think of Chocographs as a treasure map and you are riding on Choco for a treasure hunting. Once you have found a Chocograph, go to the World Map and ride on Choco. Press the triangle button and then equip the Chocograph. Thus, your treasure hunting with Choco begins now. Note that if you have some Dead Pepper in your inventory, it becomes like this: _________________________________________ |> Open Chocograph menu | yeah, I have 12 | Feed him a Dead Pepper (Remaining:12) |<---Dead Pepper in my | Cancel | inventory. |_________________________________________| These are the points that you should take note of: ------------------------------------------------- 1)There are a total of 24 Chocographs scattered all over these three places. The three places are Chocobo's Forest, Chocobo's Lagoon and Chocobo's Air Garden. 13 Chocographs can be found in Chocobo's Forest, 7 in Chocobo's Lagoon and 3 in Chocobo's Air Garden. That adds up to 23 chocographs and one left. Chocograph #20 can be found in either Chocobo's Forest or Chocobo's Lagoon, provided that you have found all the six Chocograph Pieces. 2)Keep digging for Chocographs in a particular place until Choco senses that there is no more Chocographs buried here. Then, move on to other places to dig. Eg. After digging up all the Chocographs in Chocobo's Forest, you might consider visiting Chocobo's Lagoon to find the remaining Chocographs. 3)When playing the Chocobo's Hot and Cold game, it is not always so lucky that you will find a Chocograph. In this case, play the game several times until you find it. You might want to take note that chances of the buried treasure is Chocograph is higher if the treasure is buried deeper. 3)It is VERY IMPORTANT that you equip the Chocograph when finding the buried treasure in the World Map. Choco will not DIG in the world map if a Chocograph is not being equipped or the treasure has been found. 4)There are four Chocographs that lead to four special locations. Upon finding these four locations, Choco will fall asleep and be teleported to the Chocobo's Dream World. At Chocobo's Dream World, Fat Chocobo, the god of all Chocobos will bestow a special ability to Choco such as the REEF ability, Mt ability, SEA ability and SKY ability. [Please refer to 'Chocobo's Abilities' section for details.] 5)You NEED NOT find any TREASURE in ANY PARTICULAR ORDER. Certain treasures require certain abilities which you might have not learnt yet. It is advisable that you obtain these treasures later in the game when Choco has gained new abilities. 6)When looking at the Chocograph menu, there will be a treasure chest symbol next to each Chocograph. There are a total of six Chocograph Pieces and each Chocograph Piece provides the whereabouts or information regarding Chocobo's Air Garden. It also tells you something that there is a secret in the Chocobo's Air Garden. Before I reveal the possible location(s), here are some points that you should take note: 1)As the name implies, Chocobo's Sky Garden is a floating island. That means that its location is not fixed. However, it will only be in either ONE of these FIVE locations. I am not sure what's the probability of Chocobo's Air Garden will be in these five locations. I suppose it is RANDOM. 2)If you look at the spot where Chocobo's Air Garden is, you will always see a small, black and round shadow. This shadow is being casted by the floating island itself. Simply position your gold chocobo hovering above the shadow and use the Dead Pepper. You will immediately be transported to Chocobo's Air Garden. 3)It is quite tricky to find Chocobo's Air Garden. It took me at least an hour to find. But, the thing is once you have found the place, Mene will add a dot to your World Map. This makes finding Chocobo's Air Garden easier. Here's the interpretations of the six Chocograph Pieces. 1)Tells you that there is a 'danger' somewhere in the sky. What is it? I won't tell you. That 'somewhere' is the Chocobo's Air Garden. That 'danger' is a boss that starts with the letter 'O'. 2)This place is hard to find without giving any clue. Island in Salvage... It didn't tell much. It is in Salvage Archipelago. It's in a small isolated island in between Daguerreo and Chocobo's Lagoon. There's no beach in the island but there's only one small patch of forest. 3)In Kuentis Peninsula, southeast of Outer Continent. Head southeast from where the Earth Shrine is and you will pass by two forests. Continue on and reach the end. 4)In the northeast of the Mist Continent. On a mountainous region very NEAR to Alexandria Harbor. 5)Ocean in the centre of the world map. 6)It's in the EAST of Seaways Canyon in the Forgotten Continent. This place is hard to describe. To get to it, you need an airship [or ship] and Choco with a REEF ability [Sea Ability or Sky Ability is preferred.] Pilot your airship, Hilda Garde 3 or Invincible or ship [Blue Narciss] to the island north of Chocobo's Lagoon. You should see chocobo tracks on the island. Call a chocobo from there. If Choco has only the REEF ability, you have to ride Choco along the shallow waters to the cave entrance. Take a long and roundabout route towards the Forgotten Continent and then from there, turn south. You should see a '?' sign when you ride Choco on your first visit as you approach the cave. 2)To get to Chocobo's Paradise, just go to the CORNER of the world. But, if you CHECK out any Final Fantasy IX world map pictures, they will put Chocobo's Paradise in the TOP-LEFT corner of the world. The world is ROUND. You know this, RIGHT? On the island where Chocobo's Paradise is, you should see a crack on a mountain. Use a Dead Pepper after you have positioned Choco facing the crack. This will break the crack to reveal a cave. 3)There is also a Chocobo's Dream World which I did not mention in this section. [Please refer to 'Chocobo's Abilities' section for details.] ======================================================================= VI)Chocobo Hot and Cold Game ======================================================================= Finally, I have covered something to this section. More information will be added to this section in future. General Tips: ------------ 1)Be patient!!! If you can't find what you want, keep trying. 2)Practise!!! As a saying goes, practise makes perfect!!! 3)You will be in an advantage if you have an analog controller. Use the left stick to run. 4)If you keep getting 'Kweh', walk in straight lines and peck the floor after walking about one and a half to two lengths of the chocobo's body. 5)If you keep getting 'Kweh!?', just like point 4) but peck each time after walking about half to a length of the chocobo's body. 6)If you keep getting 'Kwehhh!?', take small steps and keep pecking in this area. If you can't find the treasure, try changing the angle which you peck. 7)After finding the treasure, the location of the treasure is being resetted. Search other areas and forget about the current area. Chocobo's Forest: ---------------- 1)After getting the Mt ability, you can climb onto the two rocky ledges to search for treasures. Walk near the ledges and a '!' will appear. 2)From my own experience, possibility of the treasure being on one of the ledges is very low. Always check the ground first before you consider searching the ledges. However, if you do suspect the treasure is on the ledge, quickly head onto the ledge and have a ONE quick peck. If it shows a 'Kweh', that means the treasure is not on the ledge. Then, quickly jump down the ledge and search other places. If it's a 'Kweh!?' or a 'Kwehhh!?', I suppose you know what to do. Search the ledge. Chocobo's Lagoon: ---------------- 1)Chocobo's Lagoon is a very good place to let Choco earn his beak level because the area is quite small compared to Chocobo's Forest and Chocobo's Air Garden, especially before letting the Choco gain the Ocean ability. Make use of the ramps to move between two platforms. 2)No treasure is ON the CLOUDS. Obviously, right? 3)From my own experience, majority of the treasures come from the larger platform, that is where Mene is standing. Item Points: ----------- I do not have the list that shows how many points you will get for each different item dug in each place. When I was playing the Chocobo's Hot and Cold game, I forgot to record down the points. Sorry about this!!! But, you should take note of these things: 1)For the same item, the points you get is doubled in Chocobo's Lagoon, tripled in Chocobo's Air Garden when compared to Chocobo's Forest. Eg. You get one point for finding a potion in Chocobo's Forest, two points for finding a potion in Chocobo's Lagoon and three points for finding a potion in Chocobo's Air Garden. Bonus Points: ------------ Bonus points are essential if you want to receive a high point for each Chocobo Hot and Cold game. Here's the various methods to get the different bonus points: 1)Once you dig four items in a game, you will be given extra 10 seconds more to dig. Furthermore, all the items you get will now be doubled. 2)The 'five second bonus points' applies if you can dig up the next item within five seconds. For example, after finding a treasure, you must find the next treasure within the next five seconds. The 'five second bonus points' actually vary from location to location. You get five bonus points in Chocobo's Forest, ten points in Chocobo's Lagoon and fifteen points in Chocobo's Air Garden if you meet the 'five second bonus points' requirement. 3)If you successfully dig all the treasures, you will receive marvellous bonus points. How much you will get will depend on the TIME LEFT and where YOU DIG your treasures. [Obviously, digging in Chocobo's Air Garden gives you the most bonus points and if there is more time left, you receive more bonus points.] 4)The maximum number of treasures you can dig per game is EIGHT. The ONLY exception is in Chocobo's Lagoon before you get the Ocean Ability. In this case, the maximum number of treasures you can dig per game is FOUR. As mentioned in point no. 3, if you manage to dig up all the items, you will receive a lot of bonus points. I'll give you two examples to illustrate. Assuming you are playing the game at the Chocobo's Air Garden. Case 1: ------ If 00 sec or 01 sec is left when you dig up all the items, you will receive 250 bonus points. An example of an illustration is the foaming water in Quan's Dwelling. 3)The third point is quite easy to understand. You need to know this to reach Chocobo's Air Garden. When you see a shadow on the ground, hover the gold chocobo above it and use a Dead Pepper. This will bring Choco and you to the Chocobo's Air Garden. If you don't visit the beaches in SYSTEMATIC order, you will definitely be confused and may end up wondering which beaches you have visited and which you have not, thus wasting many precious TIME. [This situation applies to me and that's one of the reason why I gave up visiting all the beaches.] Here are some tips for you. Hopefully, these tips will be of some use to you. a)Try visiting the beaches from ONE CONTINENT to another. I start off visiting the beaches in the Lost Continent because this seems to be the easiest to me. b)Walk one round along the edges of the continent, that faces the sea in order not to miss any beach. c)Have DETERMINATION and DON'T GIVE UP like me. Getting Back 'Discarded' Cards: ------------------------------ During any Chocograph treasure or any Dead Pepper treasure hunting, if there's 100 cards in your inventory, any card that you get during the treasure hunt will immediately be discarded. You might worried that there's no way to get back these 'discarded' cards. Actually, there's a way. First, you have to FIND ALL the Chocograph treasures, Dead Pepper treasures and also complete the 'Revival Of Mognet Central' side quest. Then, go to Chocobo's Paradise and talk to Fat Chocobo. The scene that involves Zidane, Mene, Choco and Fat Chocobo, which I have talked about earlier will occur. After the scene ends, you will be riding on Choco in the World Map. Now, return and talk to Fat Chocobo by pressing the usual X button. Fat Chocobo will say this if there is any 'discarded' card: "I have all the cards you've parted with during your journey." "You may take them back if you wish." You will then get all the 'discarded' cards back. Of course, you can choose whether to take back the cards or leave them under the care of Fat Chocobo. But, it would be rather stupid not to take these cards back since almost all the cards you find during your treasure hunt would be quite rare, unless you already have 100 cards in your inventory. This situation applies to me. I didn't check whether my card inventory is full or not and by the time I realised some cards were being dis- carded during my treasure hunt, it was too late!!! [Luckily, Fat Chocobo returns all these cards to me.] ======================================================================= XIII)Revival Of Mognet Central ======================================================================= Chocobo Hot and Cold game and treasure hunting with Choco is by far the most complex sidequest in Final Fantasy IX. Completing the sidequest and getting a gold Choco is essential as it not only lets you find many rare items and powerful equipments, it unlocks other sidequests like the 'Dead Pepper Treasures'. Another sidequest that depends on the gold Choco is the revival of Mognet. Because of this, I thought I will, as well, cover the Mognet Central side quest. On your way through Esto Gaza to Mount Gulug, while delivering a letter to Mogrika the moogle, you find out that the Mognet is shutting down because of an incident. From this point onwards, the Moogles will not ask you to deliver anymore letters. You can reach Mognet Central in disc three with a light-blue chocobo [with the Reef Ability]. If you manage to help ALL the moogles in the world to DELIVER ALL the LETTERS, without discarding any letter, you can do this sidequest from disc three onwards. But, don't worry if you have not not deliver all the letters. You will still be able to do this sidequest, but only from the disc four onwards. The only difference is the location of the moogle, Mois. __________________________ /Location Of Mognet Central\ /____________________________\____________________________________ |The Mognet Central is a rather big island located north of the | |Outer Continent. On the eastern side of the island, you should be | |able to find a crack in the mountain. What to do? Simply feed | |Choco with a Dead Pepper to make him break the cracks. Enter to | |find Mognet Central. Upon entering the Mognet Central, you will | |hear the familiar Moogle theme. [I haven't heard this tune for a | |very long time.] | |__________________________________________________________________| _________________ /Personal Opinion \ /___________________\_____________________________________________ |The 'Revival Of Mognet Central' side quest is a rather tedious | |side quest. In my opinion, it is not really rewarding. You ONLY | |get a Protect Ring in exchange for your efforts. Still, Moogle | |fans will definitely like this side quest. Besides, you need to | |complete this side quest if you want to obtain the Fat Chocobo | |card and let Choco learn the Revitalising Ability. | |__________________________________________________________________| __________________________________________________________________ |NOTE5 |I'll try not to REVEAL any spoiler information about this | | |sidequest. To revive the Mognet, you have to deliver a | | |a CHAIN of LETTERS from MOOGLE to MOOGLE. And, one more difference is that if you do the side quest in disc four, you need to have Quina in your party so that you can enter Fossil Roo to find Mois but if you do it in disc three, you don't need to have Quina in your party, since Mois can be easily found in Ice Cavern. In Mognet Central, one of the moogles there will tell you how many letters you have successfully delivered to the moogles if you talk to him. Refer to my Final Fantasy IX Secrets and Side Quest guide faq for a shorter and simplified version of how to complete this Mognet Central side quest. ======================================================================= XIV)Feed The Moogle Family ======================================================================= Everytime you receive a Kupo Nut for successfully delivering a letter between the moogles, you have to return to Gizamaluke's Grotto and feed it to the father of the moogle family, Moguta. In exchange for a Kupo Nut, you will receive a random item. The random item includes items like Tent, Phoenix Pinion etc. During your 'Dead Pepper Treasures' hunting, you will receive 7 Aloha T-shirts. [It's the foaming water directly between the Mist Continent and the Outer Continent.] But, you have eight party members. You can get the 8th Aloha T-shirt by giving a Kupo Nut to Moguta in disc four at Gizamaluke's Grotto. Now, you have the full set of Hawaiian gear. Now, everyone is stylin'. [For more details about the use of Straw Hat, Pearl Armlet, Aloha T-shirt and Sandals, please refer to the 'Southern Tropical Outfits' section for more details.] ======================================================================= XV)Southern Tropical Outfits ======================================================================= Thanks to Douglas Baumgartner for telling me the use of the Aloha T-shirt, Straw Hat, Pearl Armlet and Sandals. Aloha T-shirt, Straw Hat, Pearl Armlet and Sandals are a full set of the Southern Tropical Outfit. Remember that in Final Fantasy VI, Square added Imp Weapon and Armour for the characters? Those who wants more challenge, defeat Kefka, the final boss with your party members as Imp by equipping them with Imp Weapon and Armour. Equip your character with this FULL-SET of outfit. [This includes equipping the Aloha T-shirt, Straw Hat, Pearl Armlet and Sandals.] You notice that your character's Defense, Evade, Magic Def and Magic Eva will decrease to ZERO while Speed, Strength, Magic and Spirit might also greatly be reduced. Take this ultimate challenge. Equip these outfits on your party members and see if you can defeat Ozma, Hades etc or the final boss, Necron. Actually, it makes no difference. Except that if you think Ozma is too 'easy' for you, you might consider equipping these outfits to make the fight tougher and more challenging for you. [I didn't really let my party members to wear this outfit to beat Ozma. If I did, I probably have little chance of defeating Ozma.] Major Dropback: -------------- In Final Fantasy VI, when your characters are changed to Imp and are equipped with Imp weapon and armour, you can immediately see a great difference between the Imp and the NORMAL characters. Well, I guess that's Imp. My complain is that when you equip the full set of all this tropical outfits, you don't really SEE ANY NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE in the characters' outfits during battle. What a pity! At least, some colour changes with the outfits will be fine!!! Don't you think so? It can be quite boring, seeing your character wearing the SAME coloured outfit all the time during battle. Where To Get The Outfit: ======================= There are 8 Aloha T-shirts, 8 Straw Hats, 8 Pearl Armlets and 8 Sandals. The reason is there are eight party members, right? Okay, here's how to get these equipments: 1)Dead Pepper Treasure: =>Foaming Water Directly Between Mist Continent and Outer Continent. =>Please refer to the 'Dead Pepper Treasure Locations' section on how to get the Dead Pepper treasures. =>You will find 8 Straw Hat, 8 Pearl Armlet, 7 Aloha T-shirt and 8 Sandals. 2)What happen to the last Aloha T-shirt? =>Give a Kupo Nut to Moguta in Gizamaluke's Grotto in disc four to receive the last Aloha T-shirt. =>Please refer to the 'Feed The Moogle Family' section for more details. To your Treasure Hunting ranking, simply speak to the Four-armed Man or the woman at the Treno Inn. Once you reach rank S, speak to the Four-armed Man in Daguerreo. He's standing in the room where the moogle, Noggy is. When Four-armed Man finds out that you are a Rank S treasure hunter, he will then become intimidated and he runs out of the room abruptly. Follow him to the entrance and he will then tell you about his true identity. [What's his identity? You find it out yourself. My current Treasure Hunting Ranking is only 'C' but then I have already know his identity.] After that, he will hand you the 'Rank S Award' key item. The treasure hunting ranking is determined by a point system: 1)1 point for every chest, searched Field icon, and item gained in event sequence, and every key item purchased in the Treno's Auction House [with the exception of Magical Fingertip and Pearl Rouge]. 2)2 points for every chest found on the World Map while riding on Choco. 3)No points are awarded for items found while digging in the 'Chocobo Hot and Cold' game or bought from Stiltzkin. __________________________________________________________________ |TIPS8 |You might also want to take this opportunity and challenge | | |Four-Armed Man to a Tetra Master card game. If you already have 100 cards, you won't be able to get any new cards, unless you discuss some cards away. However, during any Chocograph treasure or any Dead Pepper treasure hunting, if you already have 100 cards, the new cards that you should get, would be discarded while the existing cards remain. There is a way to get back these 'discarded' card. [Please refer to the 'Chocobo's Revitalising Ability' section for more details on how to get back these 'discarded' cards.] You should always discard weak cards like the one with very low statistics and few arrows, to allow rooms for other rare cards. To discard a card, simply select the card to be discarded in the card menu and press the X button. There are a total of 100 different card types. This is what he says: Do you know why Square loves the numbers 255 and 65,535? [255 is the highest obtainable stat for the character's attributes and 65,535 is the experience gained for defeating Ozma's.] This has a little to do with the background on programming. First, you have to know something about Hexadecimal numbers. We all count in Decimal numbers, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. But the computer uses Binary numbers, 1 and 0. Early computers use this kind of numbering system. Then, the Hexadecimal was invented due to the increase of computer power. An Hexadecimal has 16 numbers namely: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F. Which means that 10 in Decimal number is A in Hexadecimal number. If you wish, open your window's calculator and select view/scientific. Type in 10 and click on Hex. This will convert the Decimal to hexadecimal. First, type in the number 255 in Dec. Then, convert it to Hex. You will get EXACTLY FF in Hexadecimal. [not the ancronym of Final Fantasy] Recall that the first Final Fantasy game uses a ROM cartridge. These cartridges also use the Hex system. Therefore, the maximum number you can get is exactly FF, or the famous 255 number. So when the person in Midgar slum said, "That's funny, I can only count to 255." The programmers laughed. It was the programmers' joke! For the number 65,535, you must be familar with the methods that a computer stores numbers. But without going to too much details, let me tell you that there are different ways to store a number: Short, Integer and Long. [there are others too but for simplicity's sake, I only put these in] Now the difference between these data types are their storage range and the speed. Additions with Short is definitely faster than Integer. Now, an Integer has the range of EXACTLY -65,535 to 65,535. Anymore and it would be a Long. When I saw Ozma's exp on your FAQ, I laughed because it's another Programmers' joke. And then I realized that Final Fantasy IX must have used Short and Integer in programming their stats. That's all Sony Valdez said. And, it's back to ysf again. When he first told me this, I was rather surprised. I immediately took my calculator out and tested it. Indeed, when I type 255 in Dec form and convert it to Hex, the letters, FF appear. Then, when I do the same thing by keying the number, 65,535 in and convert it from Dec to Hex, surprising, FFFF appears. Amazing, right? Some More Info: -------------- Quite a few number of readers who have responded after reading this section. Some asked me more details about Hex and some programming language. I am not really a programmer expert. In case, you are interested. Here's some information for you. The information below is contributed by John O. Thoma . "Machine Language" is the basic of programming language, known as Binary, or Base 2. In everyday life, we normally use Base 10, or Decimal numbers. Later, programmers decided to organise the machine language into clusters. These were known as Nibbles, Bytes, and Words. One Nibble is four Binary Digits [or Bits]. A Byte is two Nibbles, or eight bits. Finally, a Word is 4 Nibbles, or 2 Bytes, or 16 bits. Binary [Machine Language] ------ Bit - A 1 or a 0 Nibble - Ranges from 0 to 15. 0 is written as 0000, and fifteen as 1111. Byte - Ranges from 0 to 255. 0 is written as 0000 0000, and 255 is written as 1111 1111. Therefore, they decided to simplify it by introducing a new Base of numbers. This introduces the Hexadecimal Numbers. When dealing with Hex, Each Nibble is being represented by a charactor, therefore: Hex --- Bit - Too small to be written in hex [Does not exist] Nibble - Represented by one charactor. 0 is written as 0, and 15 is written as F. Byte - Represented by two charactors. 0 is written as 00, and 255 is written as FF. Word - Represented as four charactors. 0 is written as 0000, and 65535 is written as FFFF. Please note that all games, and even other programs, follow this basic design too. Thus FFFF tells the computer 1111 1111 1111 1111, while FFF1 tells the computer 1111 1111 1111 0001. These strings of ones and zeros are the only way a computer can store and act upon data. If you don't believe that this is true, try opening a word document in a Hex editor. A hex editor shows you the program the way the computer sees it. As far as I know, you will probably not see the ones and zeros, only the Hexadecimal representations of them. Lastly, the reason for the limit of 255 and 65535 is due to space issue. 65535 is exactly one word [FFFF], and 255 is exactly one byte [FF]. These are used because they give a decent range for the data they represent. These are also the two smallest parts of memory that a programmer uses today. You will probably notice that your gold in that game only goes up to 999999999. A MAJOR problem that people make is they CAN FIND the foaming water in Quan's Dwelling [Maybe, they wasn't really sure whether it's foaming water but they know that it's bubbling water.] and they use a Dead Pepper but they FIND NOTHING. The REASON is they did not enter the Quan's Dwelling cave and go and examine the edge of the patio. ======================================================================= 7)I can't find the 'Mountain Crack near Oeilvert or on the Eastern Side of the Forgotten Continent'. The locations of these two 'Dead Pepper Treasures' are very commonly asked. I have already added in whatever details I can know to help you to find these two mountain cracks. You just have to search the areas thoroughly. The only advice I can give is adjust your camera view and your perspective. It REALLY helps. I remember a person with the e-mail, , he told me that he got the gold chocobo before getting the Hilda Garde 3 airship and when he returned to the ship, Blue Narciss to change his party, he realised that the ship had turned into Hilda Garde 3. Also, when he went back to the Black Mage village, the scenes have changed and certain parts of disc three had been skipped. I am not sure how many people here who had gotten a gold Chocobo before getting the airship had encountered similar situations like that of . Theoretically, you should not be able to get a gold chocobo at this point of time. According to Timothy Leary 's reasoning, getting a gold chocobo is not possible at this point of time because you will then be able to gain access to the Forgotten Continent even though you are not supposed to. This VIOLATES the FLOW of the plot and as a result, certain plots are skipped. Maybe, you can call this a bug. My advice is the main game should be taken as the priority. The Chocobo sidequest can be done later when you are done with most of the stuffs in the game. [Advised to hunt all the Chocograph and Dead Pepper treasures at the end of disc three JUST before you head for Terra because the mist in disc four will make hunting treasures difficult.] Obviously, noone wants to skip ANY plot in the game, right? Ark is a compulsory boss, whom you will fight some time in disc three. Here's the second way to get Pumice Piece. First, you will have to find Chocograph #22, which can be dug in Chocobo's Lagoon. The name of the Chocograph is called 'Outer Island 2'. The Chocograph leads to a location where you can find several treasures. One of the treasures contained there is a Pumice Piece. You also need a gold Chocobo to reach there. [Please refer to the 'Chocograph List' section for more details.] The third way is beat Hades and gain access to the Legendary Synthesis Shop. You need a Hammer, a Pumice and 25,000 Gil to get a Pumice Piece. This method is not advisable since the Hammer has another very important use. Later, when you control Steiner to look for Princess Garnet, go back and talk to Queen Brahne to receive a Moonstone. b)Give in to Purple Jabberwock's request. [Friendly Monsters] c)In Conde Petie/Mountain path. Find all four stones [Blue, Red, Yellow and Green stones] by examining four different statues, then return to where the moogle, Suzuna is. Take the most right paths in these three paths and you will find a different statue for you to stick all the four stones in, in this area under the tree root. In return, you get a Moonstone for your efforts. d)If you have been buying things from the Moogle, Stiltzkin, so as to enable him to continue his journey, at disc four, visit the bell tower in the town of Alexandria. Talk to Stiltzkin and buy some items from him for a cheap prize. Among one of the items is a Moonstone. Above shows the four possible ways. I don't think there are any more methods to get a Moonstone. Moonstone is one of the valuable gem add-ons. Besides reserving one Moonstone to give to the Friendly Monster, Feather Circle, Moonstone is also one of the required items to be used in the synthesis shop to get Pearl Rouge. If I am NOT wrong, I THINK these two key items also help to improve your 'Treasure Hunting Ranking.' ======================================================================= 19)When is the best time to do the side quests? I personally think that the best time to do the side quests is when you have the Hilda Garde 3 in disc three. However, there are certain side quests like the Mr. Morrid's Coffee, Tantarian boss, that needs to be completed at a certain point of the game. But, for majority of the side quests like the Friendly Monsters, the Ragtime Mouse, Chocobo Hot and Cold game etc, you should do them after getting the airship. Having an airship makes travelling to a certain place easier and of course, saves time. I actually started playing the side quests before going to Shimmering Island in disc three. This is just personal opinion. However, if you do certain side quests earlier, you may get some powerful equipments earlier in the game, which may be of some use to you. Here's an additional tip for you. It's better that you find as many Chocograph treasures and Dead Pepper treasures as possible BEFORE disc four. The reason is when you reach disc four, you notice that the whole world will be FILLED with MIST. The mist makes FINDING Chocograph treasures and Dead Pepper treasures more DIFFICULT. ======================================================================= 20)What are some of the areas that cannot be accessed to in disc four? Areas that cannot be accessed in disc four are Conde Petie, Desert Palace, Oeilvert, Observatory Mountain, Esto Gaza, Ice Cavern and Pinnacle Rocks. Therefore, if there is any treasure not taken or important stuff not done yet in these areas, better do them before you go to Shimmering Island in disc three. ======================================================================= 21)I am on my way to Shimmering island to reach the World Of Terra. Octagon Rod can only be bought from the weaponsmith shop in Daguerreo or in the equipment shop in Esto Gaza during disc three. In disc four, the weaponsmith shop does not sell the Octagon Rod and Hamelin. A lot of readers told me that they have forgotten to buy the Octagon Rod. I DON'T think there's a way to get an Octagon Rod in disc four. The ONLY equipment that lets Vivi learn Firaga, Blizzaga and Thundaga spells is the Octagon Rod. So, if you didn't buy it, that means Vivi will NEVER learn these three powerful spells. ======================================================================= 22)In Lindblum castle, there is a fountain just before the lift and if you attempt to check the fountain out, Zidane will say that, "it looks like there's no place to insert the medal..." or something like that. Is there a secret involving this fountain? Quite a number of readers, more than ten approximately have asked me this question. But, I am sad to tell everyone that I have not found anything special about this fountain yet and that's the reason why I hesitate to say anything about this fountain in my faq. Furthermore, it somehow slipped off my mind. Anyhow, this fountain seems to have some hidden secrets. And the medal is yet another clue. Nevertheless, quite a number of readers have told me that it's meant to be a reference to other games. Remember Resident Evil 2 or Biohazard 2. In the main room of the Police Station, there is also a fountain which you can insert a medal in it. Similarly, the scene which Zidane knocks a guard and takes away his clothes is almost an identical situation to one of the scenes in Metal Gear Solid.
