Role Play

Arcane
Magick is the domain of the Nobility. At least, this is what they would like to think. The ability to cast Magick is hereditary and while a Mage can almost always be assured of having children who possess the talent, not everyone with the talent can use it with equal skill. In fact, there are those among the Nobility whose talent is so faint they can do little more then light candles as they walk through a room.

Timeline
A quick history of Austrena to present date.

Slavery
Slavery is not only a legal profession in Austrena, but it is also welcome in many of the Cities as a way to keep undesirables off the streets.

Slavers typically force those who are poor, guildless, or not likely to be missed into service, dragging them to Slave Markets in chains and marking them with magically locked collars. They are sometimes used by the City Watch to help apprehend extremely dangerous criminals and find themselves making good money by removing individuals who might stand in the way of someone elses political ascention.

However, this can also be a dangerous profession as it is illegal for a slaver to capture a noble or guild member. Those unrecognized guilds can be very protective of their members and conflicts erupt that usually end in blood shed. Most City guilds have arrangements with the Slavers guild stating that no member can be touched.

Pirates
Three things make for piracy:
The first is the presence of merchant vessels ladened with trade goods waiting to be snatched by the bold and audacious.
The second is taxes, making it profitable to carry good from one place to another without bothering with the formalities of stopping to have the port captain assess your cargo.
The last is illegal goods, contraband. Things that people want that have been made against the law to possess for one reason or another. All are potential profit for the freebooter
