Paw of Opolla
Paw of Opolla
MAGIC ITEM, LORE ITEM
AC: 9
STA: +5, CHA: -5, WIS: +9, AGI: +9
MANA: +5, SV DISEASE: -5
WT: 0.2
Class: CLR DRU SHM
Race: All
The paw can be worn in either hand. Also, it can be sold for
several thousand plat.
The quest can definitively be done by a 34 druid. I would hesitate to recommend
a lower level, mostly because of the Guk part of the quest. Teaming up would
help here, though doing it alone is possible at 34. This is written from the
perspective of a druid, though most of it would apply also to a cleric or
shaman.
Be aware that you will become KOS to the frogloks if you aren't already.
Overview of the quest
- Get the severed paw from Vin Moltor in the
Qeynos Catacombs.
- Get the platinum ring, and possibly the
copper and/or gold one, from Gynok Moltor in Befallen.
- Get the Guk Bracket Mildew (for copper), the
Degenerated Guk Weed (for gold), and possibly the Faerix Spores (for silver)
from the Fungus Mutant in Upper Guk.
- Turn the items from Guk into Melixis on
Kerra Island, and obtain the corresponding rings from her.
- Get the silver ring from the razorgill pool
in Blackburrow.
- Combine the four rings in the severed paw,
and enjoy your brand new Paw of Opolla.
The quest does not have to be done in this exact
order, though I would recommend doing the Befallen part before the Guk part,
since Gynok will sometimes drop the copper or gold ring. Also if you wait until
you have done the Guk part, you may be able to skip the Blackburrow part, though
this isn't a big issue.
Dispelling some common myths
Myth #1: Mitty drops most of the
rings. This was changed with the revamp of Kerra. You now need to get the
listed items from Guk and give them to Melixis.
Myth #2: Gynok is an 8 hour spawn. Gynok is a random spawn on a fifteen
minute timer. He has been known to take more than fifteen hours to spawn. He has
also been known to respawn in much less than eight hours.
Myth #3: Gynok only drops the platinum ring. Gynok sometimes drops the
copper ring. He might also drop the gold one.
Myth #4: The rats are placeholders for Gynok. Gynok always spawns at the
same place. The only rats that are placeholders are the ones that spawn in this
spot.
Myth #5: I need the Faerix Spores for the silver ring. The silver ring
can be obtained faster and more easily in Blackburrow. If you just happen to get
the spores though you might as well use them.
The severed paw from Qeynos
Go to Qeynos. When facing the gate, the
entrance to the catacombs is to your left, around the corner, behind some vines
on the wall. Actually there are more entrances, but this is the one you want.
Behind the wall is a small room with a well. Jump into the well and swim down.
You will zone into the Qeynos Catacombs.
Now look for Vin Moltor. He spawns somewhere close to the entrance and wanders
around. He looks just like the beggars. If your baking skill is very high, you
can trade him for the paw, else just kill him and loot. The severed paw looks
like a paw (duh), and is actually a 4 slot container.
Don't go too deep into the catacombs. There is a necromancer guild here, and
there is some nasty stuff you can run into, such as spectres and a rotting
sentry. The sentry can kill a mid 30's in a matter of seconds.
Gynok Moltor in Befallen
Gynok is a mummy. He spawns just inside the zone.
His placeholders include various skeletons, rats, and ghouls. They will
immediately start walking into the dungeon, going right through the first locked
door. Go stand where you can see them come. Just kill the placeholders. If you
can cope with Gynok, you can swat his placeholders like flies.
When Gynok spawns, kill him and loot. If you get the platinum ring, you are done
in Befallen. Sometimes he drops a different ring. This is both a blessing and a
curse. A blessing because now you don't have to get the component for this ring
from Guk. A curse because you now have to camp Gynok all over again for the
platinum ring. Based on his fighting, Gynok would seem to be somewhere in the
middle 20's.
The Fungus Mutant in Upper Guk
This is the hardest part of the quest. The fungus
mutant spawns in the mushroom farm. Consult one of the maps on the internet for
how to get there. Hint: go via the pit with the ladder.
The mutant spawns in the corner to the right of the ladder (when standing in
the room, facing the ladder). He has no placeholders. He drops an item about
half of the time. The items you are looking for:
- the Guk Bracket Mildew (common)
- the Degenerated Guk Weed (rare)
- the Faerix Spores (ultra rare)
You don't need the spores, but if they drop, just
keep them.
The room also spawns fungus drones, sometimes a fungus soldier, and occasionally
a fungus breeder (who looks just like the mutant). Also an ancient fungus might
spawn. Some of these may attack you. They will wander around part of the time.
The fungus drones cast low level druid spells. They will cast minor healing on
whomever you are attacking. The mutant casts the same spells, and in addition a
Clockwork Poison spell. This spell will make you spin really fast for a few
seconds, during which you cannot cast. Though supposedly a poison spell, there
is some indication that this spell may be magic based.
Another danger to watch for are the frogloks. Sometimes one will stand at the
top of the ladder for a while. And once in a while a froglok will cross the
room. The frogs will attack you when they see you fight, even if they are green
to you.
When camping this room, it helps to keep the room clear, killing the fungi as
they spawn. Keep your magic, poison, and fire resistances up. Be sure to
snare what you fight, the fungi will run and bring back (frog) friends.
Hide (make sure it worked) or go invis before you sit down to meditate.
One final note. The fungi belong to the same faction as the frogloks. It takes
only one kill to become KOS to them. So don't just assume those frogs are still
dubious.
Melixis on Kerra Island
Melixis sells alchemy ingredients in a hut to the
left of the palace. Give her the items you retrieved from the mutant in Guk, and
she will give you the corresponding rings in return. And that is all there is to
it.
The silver ring from Blackburrow
If you don't have the silver ring yet, go to
Blackburrow. Cast levitate and enduring breath on yourself and just jump into
the pit. The ring is on the bottom of the pool. It looks like a little bag (like
when you throw your fishing grubs on the ground). When you pick it up, it
reappears after a game day, so if it is not there, come back for it later. Now
just gate or teleport out.
You will be attacked by razorgills, but they are merely an annoyance. Just
ignore them, get the ring, and leave.
Combining the rings
Now comes the part you have been looking forward
to. Open the severed paw. Put the copper ring, the silver ring, the gold ring,
and the platinum ring into it. Take a moment to admire your pretty rings, for
you will not see them again. Now press the combine button. Congratulations. You
are now holding the Paw of Opolla.
