Chrissie Hynde

Chrissie Hynde is an American rock musician, best known as the leader of the band The Pretenders. She proves that you don't have to be beautiful to be a successful rock queen.

Chrissie was born on 7th september 1951 in Akron, Ohio, USA. She attended Kent State University and was a student there during the time of the Kent State shootings.

In 1973 Chrissie moved to London to be a rock journalist but soon teamed up with English musicians James Honeyman-Scott, Pete Farndon, and Martin Chambers to form the Pretenders. As a rare female bandleader and style-setter in the early days of punk and new wave, Hynde has been highly influential. Her brash style in her appearance and strong, outspoken views and songwriting gained the admiration of many (including me!!).

In 1983 she had a daughter, Natalie Ray, with Ray Davies of The Kinks and by 1984 Chrissie had married Jim Kerr of Simple Minds and had a daughter Yasmin with him in 1985. They divorced in 1989. She married artist Lucho Brieva in 1997 and resided with him in London until they separated in 2002.

Now, Chrissie can still be seen in the news as a high profile animal rights activist.
