The first school in Torbay was founded in 1828 as a branch of the principal school in St. John's. It was constructed east of the present day Anglican Church Hall, off Lower Street and demolished in 1940.

During the year 1862-1863, the administration of the school was transferred to the Protestant School Board.

A new one-room school, St. Michael's School, was opened in 1939, built by Bob Codner, Harry White and Michael Rodgers. A second classroom was constructed by Billy Burton, a contractor, Jim Sullivan and Henry Wells of Pouch Cove. Finally, a third and final classroom was constructed in 1954 by Henry Codner and Hugie Thorne. In 1967 the school was closed.

The first Roman Catholic school was established in 1843, however, it appears that the schoolhouse was not completed until 1850. The early one-room school appears to have been located on the southside of Torbay and co-existed with the Convent School that began operations in 1865.

In 1918, a one-room school was constructed on the northside of Torbay which eventually expanded into a three room facility. This was know as a primary and elementary school where grades one to seven were taught before then attending the higher grades at St. Michael's Convent.

St. Michael's Convent School continued as an all grade school until 1956, when several grades were transferred to the new Holy Trinity School.

In 1956, the Holy Trinity School was opened and the Northside School closed, being demolished in 1969.
