Hey! It’s been two years since I started this site, and life just keeps getting more amazing!
So many things, weird and wonderful, have occurred. Julian’s Piano Bar went from a pipe-dream to a strange reality, I became the first radio personality in Butte to be “fired” for writing humorous comments about the stodgy corporate toadies who currently work in the media, the city of Butte had to pay over a million dollars to displaced employees because of the hubris of the Chief Executive on his first day in office (and I wrote a letter to the local paper telling him he was doing the wrong thing, not that anyone ever listens to me), and the handsome hubby and I have weathered a maelstrom of personal and public trials and tribulations. We still have a strange and wonderful relationship. I’m strange, and he’s wonderful.
As Elton John wrote, “I’m still standing,” and Julian’s is primped and primed to embark on our springtime season. St. Patrick’s day is a mere two weeks from today, so I need to post your lovely schedule of events.
St. Patrick’s Day is Saturday, March 17, 2007. The parade passes us on Granite Street, so have a cuppa or a toddy and ride Shank’s Mare a half block up the street for the best view in Butte of the festivities. It promises to be a great celebration, and it’s not a political year, so you don’t have to be nervous about who’s shaking your hand and kissing your wee babe.
Julian’s will be open at 11 a.m., serving your favorite drinks, warm and cold. Tune in frequently for the weather report. Dress appropriately. The parade starts at 11 a.m. and will follow its usual route. For a parade route map, e-mail my new daytime gig. butteweekly@onewest.net
We’ll have live music all day.
1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., “Piano Bob” Daly will entertain you with his original music and favorites from the past. Bob draws his inspiration from the thoughts and feelings in the crowd and the room, so be sure to bring a clear conscience and a good heart, unless you want to hear a song or two that cuts you to the quick. He’s discreet, but you can’t hide your lyin’ eyes.
At 3:00 p.m., we will entertain select wordsmiths selected in the First Annual Teague O’Regan Limerick Contest. Fabulous prizes will be awarded, ribald selections will be read and recited, and hilarity will ensue. Do not forget your sense of humor. See our website, www.julianspianobar.com for details on how to enter and rules, prizes, and goodness knows what.
3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., it’s Dave Coleman, “The Commissioner,” pianist and singer, with all his friends, “The Unholy Choir.” Yes, he’s fresh from the good fight in the old Courthouse over Butte’s new Historic Preservation ordinance, which I think, and he thinks, is another piece of idiotic, bureaucratic bull-feathers designed to put change in the pockets of moronic city inspectors who already spend too much time eating lunch and patting each other on the back (when they aren’t on the streets of Butte staring into monumental potholes and scratching their heads in wonderment.) Come sing some good old ‘70's tunes like Piano Man, Rocket Man, Cheers, and more!
Wear plenty of green, bring plenty of green, and greet friends old and new at Julian’s Piano Bar, the hottest drinking establishment in Butte.
Love, Robin
5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., it’s Ragtime Dan Battleson! Dan and the beautiful Susie will thrill you with their infectious personalities and their style and eclat. Dan plays everything from your Scott Joplin favorites like The Entertainer, as heard in the movie The Sting, to favorites from the Roaring Twenties and beyond! Do not miss this show. The winsome Susie will be entertaining all with her vivacious conversation and stunning good looks, and if I get my way, she’ll join the Unholy Choir for a few Irish ditties. Such a group of wicked sirens you have never encountered. You are invited to join in, but do watch your language. Ribald chicanery, flattery, and innuendo are encouraged, but bigotry, bad grammar, and sloppy diction are frowned upon.
8:00 p.m. to closing time, The Ole Professor, Ed Yelsa, will tickle the ivories of the 1911 Steinway grand. From Cole Porter to George Gershwin to Arlo Guthrie, Ed knows them all. He’ll take us on a musical flight on the good Spruce Goose to the frontiers of the Universe–motto, we’ll be seeing stars from Janice Joplin to “Old Blue Eyes” Frank Sinatra to Bing Crosby as we make our way past Mars to Jupiter, and beyond. We’ll be circling Uranus on our way to the Restaurant at the End of the Universe. Please remember to bring your towel, gentlemen.
Love, Robin
