THE BENT BACK TULIPS

The Bent Back Tulips, based in Wellington, New Zealand, are a pop/rock outfit put together by rhythm guitarist/vocalist, Carlton McRae. He and fellow members, Simon Dibble (keyboards/guitar/vocals) and Michael 'PA' Paterson (drums/percusion) were three of four 'Pagans', a notable Wellington act from 1988-1990. The Tulips actually differ as little in style of composition from the Pagans as they do in personnel. The unique talents of Mark Battershill on lead guitar/vocals completes the studio line-up, with 'guest' bass players brought in to cover live performance. Songwriting is predominantly shared by Dibble and McRae, seasoned composers, whose music and lyrics encapsulate well the genericness of their country, particularly the Capital city of Wellington. (Although Dibble and Paterson now reside in Auckland). The Tulips eleven track, self titled debut CD is fresh and exciting, yet portrays an underlying maturity. Intellectual, melodic, the album is an attack upon all senses. At times humourous and light, at others more brittle, with tongue-in-cheek cynicism, deliberately free of political 'grandstanding'.
