**Chapter 1;A Helping Hand**

******CHAPTER 1;A HELPING HAND******

"But I don't get it! I thought you cared about me!" Jen said, trying to hold back her tears. "We're perfect for each other! What's so wrong with that?" she asked, as the tear slowly rolled down her cheek. "Jen, it's not you, it's me!" There you go, the classic line, she thought to herself. How could this be happening to me? I thought we were actually getting somewhere. "Jen, look. I think it's about time we spend time apart. Just a few weeks or something, cause we're just moving too fast. I can't handle it, I need my space." Brian said, looking down at the soft sand which managed to squirm between his toes, initially avoiding her reaction. Jen stood frozen, not able to handle what she just heard. "I'm sorry it had to be this way. You know I'll always love you!" he said, finally looking up to see another tear roll down her cheek. She stared into his deep brown eyes, and was surprised to find that he almost looked as sad as she did. His light brown hair was spiked, just the way she liked it. This is it! We're over. It was the end of a great relationship with the guy she thought she would spend a great portion of her life with. Not replying, she remained still, as Brian gave her a kiss on her forehead and turned around, fading into the distance. Jen collapsed to the sand, balling her eyes out, thinking about where she went wrong. The sun had begun to set, and the sky was a light orange color. The beach was empty, as Jennifer lay her head on a rock, listening to the crashing of the waves. By then she had already stopped crying, but her eyes remained red, filled with sorrow and pain.

"Yo Matt! What the hell man? Go find it!" Dave yelled across the living room. "What? I told you, I don't have it!" Matt replied with annoyance, after hearing his younger brother repeatedly asking for the frisbee which had seemed to disappear. "Shut up Matt! You had it last, now go find it, before I pound you!" Even though he knew his brother wasn't stronger than he was, he concluded that just going out to the beach would help him to shut up. Matt quickly grabbed his navy blue visor and headed out the patio doors to the nearby beach. As he got closer and closer to the empty beach, from a distance, he was able to see a girl, around his age, crying near a large rock. Hey, she's pretty hot, he thought to himself, giggling a bit. "Man, poor girl!" he said, as he slowly neared her little by little. He gently tapped her on the shoulder, hoping she wouldn't yell at him. "Ummmm, excuse me?" he said softly, hoping he didn't frighten her. "What?" she replied, with her back still facing him. "Uhh, I'm sorry to disturb you, but you're sitting on my frisbee." he said, trying to hold back his laughter. She quickly turned around to see who had spoken to her, and was surprised to see that he looked so innocent and sweet. He smiled at Jen, making her feel a sense of warmth. "I'm Matt!" he said, holding out his hand. Still unsure with the guy, Jen maintained a neutral face, and shook his hand. Man, this guy is pretty cute. "What's goin on? Are you alright?" Matt asked with concern in his face. "What are you doing here anyway? Just leave me alone!" she replied, sort of yelling. He looked at her with shock, as she regretted her use of tone. "Man, such a loud voice for such an innocent looking girl like you!" he teased. "Just go!" she yelled back. "Yeah, you know what? I'd love to, but the thing is, you're sittin' on my frisbee!" he said, smiling once again. "URGH! Here!" she said, handing him the frisbee. He grabbed the frisbee from her hand, and stood there, with an awkward pause between them. Jen looked at Matt once more, giving him an awkward look. "What? Aren't you gonna go?" she asked, kinda giggling to herself, of how weird he was for just standing there. "Yeah, I will, just until you tell me what's buggin' you!" he replied. "WHAT? Ok, do you really expect me to tell you my personal issues?? I mean, I don't even know you!" "Sooooo???? And your point is?" he asked. "Man! You don't give up do you, Mr. Matt….." "Ballinger!" he finished. And no, I won't give up, because it's obvious you're pretty down right now." "Man, can't you just shut up and leave?" Matt didn't reply, but just stood up and began to walk. "Matt…. wait!" he turned around, with a smile on his face. "I'm sorry! But what's with all your smiles? she asked laughing. "Nothing, I just find you pretty amusing!" he laughed. "So, are you gonna tell me or not?" "This is the thing, I just broke up with my boyfriend, like, an hour ago. I dunno, it's just all screwed up between us two." "Do you still want him?" he asked. "Well, DUH! Would I be crying if I didn't! I mean, I sound like a total sap, but I thought we were meant for each other." "You know what Jen? I know I don't know too much about this person, but if he dumped such an awesome girl like you, I guess it's already proven that he's not worth the tears!" he said, smiling once again. Jen looked up at him. That was the cutest thing anybody had ever said to her. She stared into his deep blue eyes, and somehow knew that she had seeked comfort. Matt was so natural. He was the guy next door type of boy that she knew she'd definitely see a lot more of. His smiles were so sweet and comforting, and his blond hair brought out his perfect eyes. He was such a cutie!

"Jen, there you are! I've been waiting for you all night. Where have you been?" her mother asked with much curiosity. "Just out!" she replied, as she shut the front door behind her, and quickly headed for her room. It had already been dark out, and she knew her mom wouldn't let her leave for another walk, so she took out the pictures which Brian and her had taken in a nearby photo-booth and held it to her heart. Just looking at the pictures made her eyes water all over again. Everything was all screwed up between them. She had always thought they were perfect for each other, and she couldn't understand why it was so difficult for him to see that. Another tear rolled down Jennifer's face, as she slowly lay down in bed. She closed her eye, humming to the Backstreet Boys song, "I need you tonight", which played in her room, eventually making her fall asleep.
