30 January, 2000, Big Day Out, Melbourne VIC

BY SHANE BROUGHTON (WEBMASTER)

Killing Heidi, the first band we saw today at the BDO were by far the best. The set was so energetic and the atmosphere… whew…. What can I say? Broken water pipes, Showered mosh pits, Security climbing up pillars, and a birthday sing along? It could only happen at the Big Day Out!

I knew this was going to be one hell of a gig right from when Adam came out to tune his drums before the gig. "BAM---BAM---BAM---BAM" he went. "HEY!---HEY!---HEY!---HEY!" was the thousand strong crowd's response! The crowd were fanatic when they stepped out on stage. Everyone was pushing for that front-center spot and nobody could get to it! Ella's reaction was simple when she took to the mike. "Wow! Look at this! Oh my God!" The bass riff started and they were ripping through "Leave Me Alone". What a way to get the hot crowd going.

During their version of silerchair's "Tomorrow" which by the way caused a massive sing along, a water pipe going across the roof that a fan was sitting on broke and the whole mosh pit got showered in water! The crowd got pumped and cheered their lungs out. So much that you couldn't hear the band at all! After the song that chants to the pipe breaking fan went up. "You are a wanker!" This was quickly followed by a sing along of "Happy Birthday to Ella" which was great.

Further into the set, another pipe broke, this time the guy who broke it kept jumping on the pipe to make it worse until the security bloke had to climb up the pillar to get him down! What a rock moment!

I was sad to see that half the crowd left after "Weir" had been played. But never the less, the show went on and rocked out in true Killing Heidi fashion.

This was certainly a gig that I will NEVER forget in my life. It had it all except for a smoking monkey, but who knows, that monkey could have been there somewhere!
