George & Marion Youngson

George Youngson b.1851 was raised in Newhills, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, the son of John Youngson & Margaret Skinner.
Marion Youngson (nee Smith) b.1865 Carnwath, Lanarkshire, Scotland, was the daughter of Robert Smith and Margaret Henderson, who emigrated from Carnwath to Oamaru.
They married in 1885 and had seven children: Margaret (1885), John (1887), Robert Alfred (1889), William George (1891), Christina (1894), Alexander (1897)and Alice (1899).The family was beset by tragedy.

Alex, George & Robert Youngson

Trooper Robert Alfred Youngson (Right) of the Otago Mounted Rifles saw service in Gallipoli, but died of dysentry aboard the H.S. "Hunts Green" on 31 Aug 1915.
Corporal William George Youngson (Centre)of the 3rd N.Z. Rifle Brigade saw service in France & Belgium, but died as a result of gunshot wounds to the head on 6 Oct 1918, near Abule, France.
Alex Youngson (left) also enlisted but died during the influenza epidemic which struck immediately following World War I. He also died in 1918.

Youngson Sisters

Margaret Excell (nee Youngson) is pictured above with her son Walter Excell, and sister Christina Youngson (later McCoy); and below, with her sister Alice Summers (nee Youngson) shortly before her death in 1947.

John Youngson 1887-1929 worked on the railways. His wife Hilda (nee Hughan) died in May 1918 of burns received when her dress caught fire whilst burning rubbish in her backyard. Their three children, Cecil, Fairy & Alice were raised by their grandmother (Marion Youngson-Craig) in Balclutha.

An early photo of George Youngson 1851-1900. He was a farmer in the Waitaki Valley and Ngapara, and lay preacher for the Presbyterian Church. He died of hydatids aged 49 years. His wife, Marion, remarried James Craig (of Balclutha)and there were three children from the second marriage; Jim, Gladys and David Craig.
