ROCK N ROLL EXPERIENCE - Black Light Burns / Sevendust 11/3/07
November 3, 2007 Baltimore, Maryland Rams Head Live
Having seen Sevendust quite a few times in the past, I knew that the band always draws a decent crowd, that their fans are loyal, & they usually have an interesting assortment of opening bands at every show, & on their current 2007 tour, they brought more of the same for the Baltimore crowd on a Saturday night! This was actually the night that day light saving time kicked in, so there was an extra hour of party time for all the people in attendance, but I’ll get more into that in a minute. The opening bands were kinda...blah, with the exception of the band Black Light Burns, who just blew me away with their zany sounds, weird melodies, & overall nutty stage appearance, combines with interestingly artsy hard rock music that’s got too many other elements to be considered straight up rock! The band is fronted by Wes Borland, who was the guitarist for Limp Bizkit, & I know he’s got to be sick the death of hearing that, but you can’t deny where he came from! Wes came out wearing a coat that had fur trim, & he had make up smeared all over his body, & he had a painted on “Rolly Fingers” style moustache (old school baseball fans will get that reference!) & he had make up on his face that made it appear as if he had a beard, but infact it was NOT a real beard! This was in stark contrast to the last time I saw the band & Wes was sporting make up that was very Crow like...anyways, the band opened with “Mesopatamia” & that is my personal favorite off the bands debut cd! Black Light Burns played a set that was around 45 minutes long, & immediately after their set, the entire band went to the merch table to meet fans! When I walked by the merch table, I saw a sing that read “Bloody Used Drum head” ?? & when I asked the merch guy about that, he said they were selling stage used drum heads from Black Light Burns that were autographed by the band & the price was $15, but they were entertaining offers...I thought that was a pretty cool little souvenir, plus it was a great way to make a buck off of something that was essentially going to be thrown away! Anyways, in all honesty, Black Light Burns was the highlight of the night for me! After Black Light Burns, the stage was cleared, there was one more opening act, who just did nothing for me, so I stayed in the back till it was time for Sevendust to take the stage. Sevendust’s stage set was almost identical to what they had the past tour or so.it had ramps that allowed the band to run around & go behind the drum riser, & the bands set list was:
Pieces Denial Terminator Prayer Enemy Ugly Deathstar Clueless Waffle Praise Born TO Die Black Beg To Differ Face 2 Face Lajon was wearing a vintage Led Zeppelin red jersey & his voice sounded as strong as ever, while the twin guitar attack was intense, the rhythm was booming, & overall, the band sounded superb, BUT, the thing I have to note is that at times, the crowd was lame! When the band left the stage before it’s encore, the crowd wasn’t chanting, cheering or anything, & I heard someone comment that they didn’t think the band would even come back out because the crowd was dead! When the band took the stage though, the place erupted, & it was a great show on a fun filled Saturday night, & later on after the show, Lajon was spotted @ a bar across the street hanging out, & other band members were also enjoying the extra hour of party time this night allotted everyone!
