REVIEWS
Brutally heavy, with shredding guitar tones & a great sense of timing...that's how I'd describe this bands debut CD on Roadrunner Records...."Numbered Days" opnes the CD with a blood heavy balance of rhythm with power chords galore! The 2nd song, "Self Revolution" starts off even faster & actually has breaks in the song that have harmony, alongside the screams. The guitar work has a element of classic metal to it, & the song itself is extremely dynamic! I dare you to try to pigeonhole this band....I mean, they are very heavy, but they also have amazing melody & harmony & whether you like it or not, I think they have a very bright future, although it would be nice to hear a guitar solo in a few songs....but I do want to say that there are some lead licks, but no full fledged solo's! "Life To Lifeless" starts off with drums that sound like a machine gun...it's brutal stuff to say the least! I wonder though, when the lead screamer of this band gets through a concert, is his voice totally anihilated? He totally screams like he's being killed at the slaughter, but the CD is sooooo this is a must have CD for hard music fans!
Country sounding Hip, mellow at times, angst ridden at times, very modern for sure, Trik Turner blend a mix of rock, folk, & urban sounds to make their own hybrid of non-formulated rock that is very hard to catergorize. They also do a cover of the song "New York Groove" which KISS ans will know that Ace Frehley is famous for covering back in the 70's! "Not Like You" is definitley a stand out track with alot of emotion, & "Black Sheep" is very Rap heavy...it's not really our type of thing here at Rock N Roll Experience for sure, but it is very artistic & has it's merits. Overall, Trik Turner is a good, original band that didn't copy that rock/rap formula that Korn, Rage ATM, etc. have perfected.
TRACK LISTING: Walk A Crooked Mile, Down The Line, Brave New World, Voices From The War, Mine All Mine, Shut Your Mouth, Kill The World, Dr. Love, No Remorse, Red Raw, Serial Killer, The Game, Overnight Sensation (live)
Similiarly, every Motorhead record has that certain sound, that certain punch, that definite feel that is Motorhead. Every track on their latest CD Hammered is definitley soaked with the stink that is the essence of Lemmy & Motorhead. The bass heavy riffs, the grizzled, gurgled vocals of Lemmy, the dirty guitar tones of Phil, the solid drumming of Mikkey, just as Ace of Spades was a full blown assault from beginning to end, so it Hammered. "Walk A Crooked Mile" actually, get this kiddies, has a guitar solo! All of the songs on the CD do! "Down The Line" has a classic metal sound & when you listen to it, it makes you realize just what metal is supposed to be....it's not Poison, or the glam bands that helped to kill the music, it's Motorhead...they are mean, nasty, & they don't care what you have to say! Warts & all, Lemmy has still got it! "Voices From The War" is brutal & "Serial Killer" features a cameo by wrestler Triple H on vocals....this song is pretty strange too! Dizzy Reed, from the band formerly known as Guns N Roses plays piano on "Mine All Mine" too! As a special bonus, they also included the Triple H theme at the end of the disc!
Do you remember the Alice In Chains CD "Dirt"? Well, this latest opus from Jerry Cantrell picks up where that CD left off...it's dark, it's melodic, it's about a man & his guitar working through his personal problems via music! "Solitude" takes you on this tranquil visit through what Jerry was going through at what seems like a time when he needed to be alone & re-group his thoughts, while "Spiderbite" has a chorus that features Jerry yelling, "Cain"...it's a call of the wilf for sure! "Gone" is a slower, acoustic oriented track that is sorta in the vein of the "Sap" era of Alice in Chains, but it reminds me of a Willie Nelson song for some reason & that's a good thing! "Anger Rising", the first single off the CD is already getting saturation around the USA via radio, but I think the first single should have been "Angel Eyes"m which is very radio friendly & has great timing & rhythm. Alot of these songs have already been road tested because Jerry has been playing alot of these tracks on a small scale tour that he started on late last year. "Hellbound" is one of thpose songs that, just by the title, you can tell it's a rocker! Overall, this is NOT Alice in Chains, but it's the closest we're going to ever get to AIC until Layne gets his act together. Jerry has put together a very emotionally charged, good rock record!
3rd Strike is a rock/rap oriented combo that reminds me vaguely of Papa Roach, but of course, they have thier own vibe, so they are not a P-Roach rip-off! The surprise of this disc is the cover of "Paranoid", the Black Sabbath classic. I like the way they updated it & made it their own thing with some scratching, & a few new sounding riffs thrown in. "Flow Heat" mows you over with a steam roller type tenacity, while "Lisa" has a more personal feel to it. "Strung Out" is a good track to listen to in the car...it will have you driving very fast! This band will be on Ozzfest this summer, & I would advise you to get their early & check out their set....this band is good!
Think Rage Against the Machine influenced, but not angst ridden....this is what I get from the band Headstrong & their debut release on RCA records....it's definitley edgy & angry, but it's more channeled & comes from a different place than say a RATM or System of a Down....this is not a politically charged disc...it's more fun & personally, it's got a better feel to it. A song like "All of the Above" has a jazz influenced vocal mixed with Rap for flavoring, while it's got a solid rhythm & crunchy guitars! The 38 second track "Build" is mellow & leads up to the hit single "Adriana"....I totally love that chorus, "If I put my mind to it I can figure it out"....it's about time someone put a positive message in heavy music. "Do What You Feel Like" should be the next single off the CD...it's got a punchy bass line & has a definite hit single feel to it! "Get In" is more jazzy, while "Hoodies & Hoods" starts off mellow & after 1 minute, it rips your head off! I'll admit that I wasn't too sure about this band when I heard their first single, but they are really, really good & deserve attention from rock fans!
TRACK LISTING: Nothing., Something's Going On., 6 O'clock On A Tube Stop., Going Down., Took It Away., Starbucks., The Springs., Shut Yer Face., Pacific Ocean Blues., The Distance., W.D.Y.C.A.S.I., Hi-Fi Serious
Want something new & very fresh sounding in rock music? Well then A is the band for you...I'll admit that the name A for a band is sorta unusual & confusing at times, but the music speaks for itself. "Nothing" is a radio friendlt rock song with a strange little synth piece thrown in to make it sound different & it works too! "Something's Going On" reminds me of Goldfinger or early Blink 182....it's got a pop oriented vibe & reminds me of Summertime! The singer for this band sounds like a young Rod Stewart at times with a very good, strong sense of melody & very friendly to the ears. "Took It Away" has an electronic drum beat to it & eventually goes into a standard sounding rock song with a mid tempo feel. "Hi-Fi Serious", the title track of the record is definitley the best song ont he CD..its has a good chorus, is up beat, & makes you want to sing with it!
Hmmmm, how can I describe this disc in one word? Crazy it's got some covers that are easy listening style muzak stuff, some straight ahead punk covers, some new wave stuff, some reggae stuff....I'll put it to you this way, if you like the Ramones, you should buy this disc, because it's an interesting experiment & some of the proceeds go towards the Joey Ramone memory fund whihc is a very nice thing as well. The bands on this CD are from all over the world & you truly have to hear this to believe it...I've never imagined a muzak version of "I Wanna Be Sedated", but there's one on here!
Thrash Metal, very heavy, & obviously very influenced by Kill Em All era Metallica! That's a brief description of Tearabyte...a guitar shredding band that's brand of music is loud, fast, & very tuned down! "Road Rage" sounds like a left-over from the Kill Em All Sessions by Metallica, which is a very good thing! The surprise track on this disc is the bands cover of the Johnny Cash classic "Ring Of Fire". I've heard several bands do this song, including Social Distortion..I think that rockers like Johnny Cash so much because he is the bad guy in country who wore balc & just looked cool, but anywho, their cover is nothing like the country soaked original, their version is played through a Marshall at 11+! If you were a fan of Overkill, Exodus, or Anthrax, back when those bands were heavy lol, then you'll love this heavy metal opus!
Screaming Ferret Wreckords is a new label to us here at Rock N Roll Experience, but I have to say that from the first 2 things that I have recieved from this label that I deeply enjoy their love for Thrash metal bands & I applause them for keeping the music alive! This Sampler disc is a MUST HAVE for hard music fans! Candy Striper Death Orgy is one of the best bands that I've heard in a long time, I love their track "Atomitivity" which reminds me alot of Nuclear Assault! I didn't even know that Meliah Rage was still even around, but thanks to this sampler, I can now report that they are still around & as heavy as ever! Suicide Contest is a great name for a band, I wihs I would have thought of that!!! I want to emphasize that I am not being condisending when I say, I love this disc, it's total energy through loud guitars, screaching vocals & thumping drums! |
