How-to UPLOAD to TRIPOD and other web hosts. [TopLink]

An example of a free Tripod website is
http://corporatism.tripod.com

Here is an example of how to upload a web page file to a free Tripod.com website.

First, go to Tripod.com
http://www.tripod.com

Log in with your member name and password. The member name for the website
http://corporatism.tripod.com would be "corporatism"
and its password is ********
top secret. :)

After you are logged in scroll down the page to the link called "File manager"

Click "File manager"

On the top of the page on the right side is a dropdown menu called
"Upload via"

On the right side of the dropdown menu is a downward-pointing arrowhead. Click it and then click
"single files (8)"

A list of blank lines will who up. On the "File 1" box click "browse"

Browse to the file on your hard drive that you want to upload to Tripod. Use the navigation tools in the browse window. Those tools are the folder with the upward-pointing arrow, and the folders listed below it. Click the up-arrow folder and double-click the folders in order to move up, down, and sideways among the folder-directories on the hard drive. Do so until you you find the html file you want to upload to Tripod. Let's call it
webpages.htm
which happens to be the name of this web page you are reading now.
[.htm or .html on the end of any file indicates an html web page file]

When you find the file called webpages.htm, select (highlight) it, and then click "open"

The file will automatically end up in the "File 1" upload box as

C:\My Documents\webpages.htm

or something similar, depending on which folder the file was found within on the hard drive (usually called the "C" drive).

Then click "Upload" near the bottom of the page. Wait until uploaded. Do not click twice, and do not do anything else on the computer until the file is uploaded. It can take around a minute if the file is long and internet traffic is slow. If the file isn't too long and Tripod isn't busy it can take just a few seconds.

After awhile the file will be fully uploaded and the screen will then say:

"Upload OK"

"The following files were successfully uploaded:"

"File 1: //webpages.htm"

You can click "Back to Upload" to return to the upload form. You can upload more files if you want to. You can upload multiple files at once. Click "Close" to close this window and return to the File Manager.

Once you upload one web page, hopefully you will load lots of them, because it is very easy to do.

--------------------

You can then use your MSIE (Microsoft Internet Explorer) browser to view the page called

http://corporatism.tripod.com/webpages.htm

Just click the link above.

Or if you have a URL in a non-clickable form use the MSIE browser to open the URL:

http://corporatism.tripod.com/webpages.htm

Select (highlight) and copy the URL above. You can use the edit menu in whatever program you are viewing the URL in. Or just right-click the highlighted URL and copy the URL from the popup menu.

Then use the MSIE browser to open the URL. Here's how to do it from the beginning to the end:

Launch the MSIE browser from the start menu button.

Start menu.
--Programs.
--Internet Explorer.
--File menu.
--Open.
--Right-click in the blank spot for the URL.
--Click "paste" from the popup menu.
--Click OK.
--Web page will open.

FTP uploading/downloading is faster, easier. [TopLink]

One can upload or download web pages to and from web hosts by using their web shells and browser-based uploading. But it is slower than using FTP (File Transfer Protocol) programs. Especially when one wants to do many pages, or a whole website.

FTP is basically just a drag-and-drop operation between the web host folder and your hard drive folders. Once the FTP program is set up once, then whenever you launch the program it is a one-click process to connect and be ready to upload or download. The instructions below are then no longer necessary.

*Download.com (CNET) page for FTP programs. Click the links at the top to reorder the list to show the highest-rated freeware, shareware, and trialware FTP programs at the top. Also, sort the list according to the number of downloads the last week. Ignore the "sponsored matches."
http://www.download.com/FTP/3150-2160_4-0.html?tag=dir

There are several, free, highly-rated FTP programs. Such as WinSCP. It can be downloaded here:
http://download.cnet.com/WinSCP/3000-2160_4-10400769.html

Quick setup of FTP (FileZilla, etc.) [TopLink]

To set up FTP for this Angelfire website:
http://www.angelfire.com/rnb/y

Fill out the form as follows:

Host: ftp.angelfire.com
Username or ID: rnb/y
Password: (fill in your Angelfire password)

Leave everything else blank or at their default settings. Click OK.

You will not need to fill out the form again. To connect to the Angelfire website later it is a one-click operation.

------------------

To set up FTP for this Tripod website:
http://corporatism.tripod.com

Host: ftp.tripod.com
Username or ID: corporatism
Password: (fill in the Tripod password)

Leave everything else blank or at their default settings. Click OK.

You will not need to fill out the form again. To connect to the Tripod website later it is a one-click operation.

------------------

FTP connection settings are now completed. Note the pattern. You usually just put "ftp" in front of your web host URL.

-----------------------------------

FTP uploading or downloading. [TopLink]

Make an FTP connection as previously discussed. Here below is how to use a typical FTP program to upload some web pages to your web host. The right and left side locations may be reversed depending on how the FTP program is set up.

--On the right side will be your hard drive folders and files.
--On the left side will be the folders and files on your web host.
--Navigate up or down the folders by double-clicking the folders and up-arrows.
--Select-highlight the files on the right to be uploaded.
--To select-highlight multiple files, press the CTRL key while clicking each one.
--To select-highlight a list of files that are next to each other, use the shift key.
--Click the arrow pointing to the left. Or right-click the selected items and choose "upload" from the menu.
--The FTP program will upload all the selected files to your website.

To upload many files, or your whole website:
On the right side of the FTP program window is the directory of files and folders on your hard drive. Go to the folder where the web pages are that you want to upload from your hard drive. Select-highlight the top file to be uploaded by clicking it. Then, move the cursor down to the bottom file to be uploaded. Press the SHIFT key, and then while holding it down, click the bottom file to be uploaded. This highlights all the files between the top and bottom files. If you don't want some of those files to be uploaded, then hold down the control key (Ctrl) while clicking those individual files. Try it a few times to see how it works. Once you have selected all the files you want to upload, then just click on the arrow pointing to the left, Or right-click the selected items and choose "upload" from the menu.

To download files just reverse the direction. Select files from the remote browser, and click on the arrow pointing to the local browser. Be sure to first drill down in the local browser to the folder/directory where you want to download the files. See  the next section for more info. Be careful not to overwrite and erase your most recent pages.

----------------------------------------

Website backup. [TopLink]

It is critical to have your website backed up offline. You can use the FTP program to DOWNLOAD your own web pages off the web. This may be necessary, for example, if you have lost your hard drive backup copy, and the rewritable disk backup copies of your website.

Here below is how to download your whole website. Once you use an FTP program one time to download or upload one page or file, then you will pretty much understand how to do a whole site. Instead of selecting just one file to download, you select all the files.

It is way easier than it may seem at first. It is basically just a drag-and-drop process from the host to your hard drive. To download your web pages from off the web host just select those web pages in the FTP remote browser. Then in the local browser drill down to the folder where you want to download the files to. You may need to create a blank folder. Then click on the arrow pointing to the local browser. Or drag them there. The web pages will be downloaded to your hard drive. They are usually downloaded without all the banner ads, etc..

It is wise to keep your whole website backed up on your PC, and also on an external hard drive, or a couple rewritable CDs or DVDs. That  way you can do all your site editing offline. You can back up the changes incrementally as you go along. If your web hosts crash and you lose all copies of your website online, it is not a problem. You can reload the whole website from your offline backup copy. Just load the backup copy to your hard drive, and upload it.

You can use the freeware Syncback. SyncBack works great for backing up to external hard drives. Incremental backups only take a few minutes.

You can also use an incremental data backup program such as one from Nero or Roxio.

Nero is not free. Unless you get Nero Express that comes bundled with many CD/DVD rewritable drives. You use the Nero Burning Rom component to do incremental backups on ISO-formatted disks. The backup disks will be visible on any computer. Nero is not necessary to view or download the items from the disk.

For websites that you don't have FTP access to, you will need an offline browser to download the whole website. Or any part of it.

Offline browsers can be used to download websites. Any website. They are great for downloading many web pages in the background while you do something else. Then you can read the web pages at your leisure on or offline. That is why they are called offline browsers.

*Google search for "offline browsers"

Instant SUBMISSION to many search engines. [TopLink]

Being listed in search engines will often GREATLY increase the number of hits your web pages get.

After your web page is uploaded to the web you can submit the web page address URL to search engines by using instant submission forms. Once done there is no need to resubmit a URL to those search engines ever again. Most search engines spider sites again on a regular basis. In any case, do not submit the exact same URL for at least a month, or some search engines may consider this spamming, and may delete your web pages from their search engines.

[TopLink]
Submit URLS to many search engines at once for free with one click
at any of the first 3 links just below.
Some of this info may be out of date. The submission forms only request the URL and sometimes an email address (any will do, even an anonymous web-based email address). They then submit the URL to around 10 to 30 search engines almost instantly. The links on the submitted page are also indexed, as are the links on those pages, etc., etc.. So submit your homepage and sitemap pages first. At many websites around 95% of site hits are coming from search engines. One website example: For search hits, Google provides 88% of them, Ask.com 7%, Yahoo 2%, and Other 2%. No other search engine provides more than 0.4% of the hits for that website. You can get your web pages higher up in search engine results. How? By getting links pointing back to your web pages from other people's web pages, from some Indymedia posts, from blog posts, etc.. Click the last 2 links of the links just below. Then enter any website's homepage URL (or mirror homepage URLs). Results will list the number of pages and posts that link back to any of that website's pages. If you have the Google toolbar, it will list all backward links to any particular page.

Advertise your URL in your email signature block. [TopLink]

Put some URLs (such as your website URL) in your email signature block at the end of your email. Just paste in the signature block in any email you want to. The easiest to create is a plain-text signature block. Lots of email software lets you create one, and then store it. Then all you do is check off a box on your email in order to add the signature block to that email. Simple.

Plain-text email URLs are made clickable automatically by most people's email software that receives the email. As long as the URLs start with http. Yahoo Group archives also do this automatically for plain-text email. As long as the URLs start with http://

In HTML email you have to make URLs clickable yourself. Usually you do this just by adding a new space after the URL. Depends on the email software or service you use. Try adding a new space after a URL and see if it becomes a link. That is how it works in Yahoo Mail. Outlook Express may be like that too. Not sure.

You can create an HTML signature block with clickable links. And then copy it into your email as needed.

Yahoo Mail has a box that one can check off to add an already-created signature block to an email.

To create a clickable signature block in Yahoo Mail you have to go to "Mail Options." Then click "Signature".

There is a choice between "Plain" and "Color and Graphics." Choose "Color and Graphics." (It will automatically convert to plain text if you choose to use the signature for plain text email).

There you can enter up to 7 lines to create your signature. URLs are not always made automatically clickable. To do so manually put your cursor right at the very end of the URL and add a space to make it clickable. URLs use a lot of HTML, so you might want to use only one or two in your signature.

Click "View HTML Source" to see what is happening.

There are some bugs or problems with the signature creation page. But you can fix the problems yourself easily. Here's how. When looking at the HTML source code, delete any "<DIV>" or "</DIV>" tags. Sometimes there are a bunch of them. None of them are needed. Delete any non-breaking spaces too. They are represented by "&nbsp;" and they usually represent spaces at the ends of lines. They are unnecessary. So delete them. A "<BR>" tag at the very beginning is also unnecessary. I suggest making all the text bold. So that means you only need "STRONG" tags at the beginning and end only.

Cleaning up the HTML source code will allow more info in your signature. Since there is a limit to the total number of characters allowed in the HTML source code for Yahoo signatures.

Uncheck "View HTML Source" to see the results. If OK, then you might try giving a color to some or all of the text. Select the text and click the "T" icon to select a color. I also make it bold by clicking the "B" button. Try not to add more than 1 or 2 colors because it can add a lot of characters to the HTML code. And only add color to adjacent words and lines. Otherwise the HTML code will really expand. If you do a lot of experimentation with text color or fonts the HTML may become really cluttered, and you may need to start over by deleting all the font and color tags.

Before clicking save always check the HTML source again to clean it up as described previously.

Click save.

If there are too many HTML characters, then you will be told. Delete some. Recheck the HTML code. Click save again. Repeat as necessary.

Once happy with it, then you are done. You can add that signature to any Yahoo email you choose by clicking the spot for "Use my signature" at the bottom left after the compose form.

Or you can add it automatically to all email sent. Just click the appropriate spot on the page used for creating the signature as described above.

You can copy the signature block to other HTML email besides Yahoo Mail.
