the
White bear powwow

In
February of 1996, the third annual White bear was born but it didn't
get it start there. A few years back the pow wow was just Gordon Bell pow wow
that was started by Vicky Runearth.

The
format that Vicky Runearth wanted to do with the pow wow is to help
the kids get a better understanding in life than going into drugs, alcohol,
and gangs. By bringing in and teaching to students about our native culture.
A better way than the life they was heading but it was a lot of work for Vicky Runearth.
Thanks to her family and the help with Gordon Bell High School's
principal Mr. Hart Sera, the program got started and the pow wow was born.

On
that same year, the dance troupe called First Nations dancers was born.
The dancers was comprised of her children,
other dancers and many different drum groups around Winnipeg and surrounding areas.
With their efforts to help and promote
the native cultural to communities and many many schools.
The program was a huge success in helping people around
Winnipeg and other communities.

On
November 6th 1996. Brandon Cameron was born.
There was a huge change in the program.
There a new addition to the program, that was promoting a much younger crowd
and to keep doing what Vicky Runearth was doing.
When Brandon started dancing, he was only a mere 10 months old
but we believed that he was dancing earlier than that
because he started to dance at a sundance.
The amazing thing is that he was too young
to dance at a very young age of 7 months.
One elder said that he was too young to dance in the sundance but he shocked the
elder and many other people including us.
This young baby boy was very special, not because of his red hair but what
he is meant to be and that was to be Whitebear.

The
late Mani Delorme gave this young boy his name Wabiska Makwa.
From that day forward,
Vicky Runearth decided to name the program and the pow wow after her grandson.
Then Whitebear powwow and the Whitebear dance troupe was born.
Since then we have been promoting aboriginal awareness
and the teachings that was passed down to us.
We still promote it and now later on this year of 2003.
The White bear powwow might have a new home
at Wolseley School but still helping people
as we always been doing since Vicky Runearth
started long time ago.
Now there you have it. The history of the White bear pow wow/ dance troupe.
