TLC's T-Boz cuts loose

Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, 30, is flying solo. For a bit longer, at least. As one third of the high-flying, platinum-selling R&B trio TLC, Watkins -- whose moniker stands for "Tionne is boss" -- remains loyal to the group, despite widely publicized talk of an imminent breakup. (She remains candid, too: She tells us she's had only four boyfriends.) Though the trio's future is unclear, practical-minded Watkins is keeping busy: filling in on TV's syndicated Russell Simmons' Oneworld Music Beat; working on a pilot for her own animated series, It's a Fly World; and producing a movie, Jellybeans. Oh, and she's planning an Aug. 19 wedding to rapper Mack 10; a baby is due in November.

You've been part of TLC since '92 -- a long time. Are you ready to move on?

I'm cool with wherever we go. I've always grown within TLC, but I felt I held myself back [too] because of TLC. If it's over and it's time, then I'm cool with that. God makes a way out of no way because every time things are really awful, we still come through.

Now that you're hosting a TV show, do you see a new career?

It's simple. I have the freedom to interview who I want. When I was on tour, they worked around my schedule. [But] naaah. If I had a Buffy the Vampire Slayer or a Friends, where I got paid so much loot per episode... I'm getting older, honey. I've got money to make.

What feedback did you get from your recent book of poetry?

People respect me as a real person now. They don't just see me as an untouchable girl who sings songs to them on TV. With [poem-turned-hit song] Unpretty, I've had boys come up to me and say, "I get it. Thank you ... 'cause I've always been teased for being fat."

How do you see yourself as a woman of your generation?

I'm doing it. I'm an independent woman who has done things in 10 years that some people have never done. I came to a point where I saw people who were less fortunate and I was complaining. I thought, "Well, dag, you got some Grammys, you got this and that. So how bad is my life, really?"

How about the future? You've toured a lot and you've battled sickle cell anemia all your life.

I have to stay healthy. I never really know what my daily routine is going to be. I've been trying to get a hold on that for 11 years. I'm just going to go home and crack up watching The Sopranos.

You like The Sopranos?

Oh, God! That's the best show I've seen in my life. I like mob movies.

Sounds like you need a vacation.

I haven't had one of those in 11 years. I entered this business at 19, and my first real vacation was Feb. 14, 2000. I went to the Four Seasons in Santa Barbara with my fiancé.

T-Boz- Singer: No one knows better than Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins that looks can be deceiving. The "T" in the R&B group TLC found inspiration for the lyrics to their No. 1 single "Unpretty" in her blood -- literally. She was diagnosed at age 7 with sickle-cell disease. Two decades later, while watching a Ricki Lake show featuring women being berated by their spouses for being overweight, Watkins, 30, was inspired to write "Unpretty" as an empathetic poem based on her own insecurities. During her teen years in Atlanta, says Watkins, "I was known as a sicko who couldn't do what normal kids were doing. I couldn't go swimming because the water was too cold, I had to drink special baby milk for my bones. I felt ugly." Her "Unpretty" words ("You can buy your hair if it won't grow/ You can fix your nose if he says so"), which were put to music by producer Dallas Austin, resonate with fans. "I get a lot of tears, a lot of hugs," says the 5'2" Watkins, who went public with her illness in 1996 to refute rumors that she had AIDS. Now working closely with the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Watkins "helps get the word out," says the group's president, Lynda K. Anderson. "The motivation she provides kids is outstanding." But motivation is something Watkins must often summon up herself. In November she went straight from the Atlanta hospital where she was being treated for a sickle-cell-related spleen disorder to the nearby stage where TLC was taping a concert for HBO. "Somehow, when it was time for me to do my solo, I got it together," she says. "My mental state is strong. I stay very positive." Not to mention pretty -- and pretty experimental. Now blonde, she has tried a spectrum of hair colors, including red and purple. She also concocts different mixtures of perfumes daily "so no one will smell like me," she says. Her fiancé, rapper Mack 10, age 28, approves. "I'm still looking for a flaw," Mack says jokingly, "and I can't find one." Watkins, who is pregnant and planning a summer wedding, doesn't care if he does. "One thing I'm trying to teach kids that nobody ever taught me is that nobody's flawless," she says. *Arista parent company BMG announced that Antonio "L.A." Reid will replace Clive Davis as president and CEO. Reid, who cofounded LaFace Records and launched the careers of TLC, Toni Braxton and Usher, will replace Davis when his contract expires at the end of June. BMG also announced that LaFace Records will be consolidated with Arista, but will hold onto its own imprint and will remain in its Atlanta home. Meanwhile, Reid's cohort at LaFace, soulster Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, also has entered into a joint venture with Arista to form a new record label, with a name to be announced later.

"One thing I'm trying to teach kids that nobody ever taught me is that nobody's flawless," T-Boz says in People magazine. *Here's an article from thebox.co.uk which says that TLC's next single will be "Shout." This is a UK site so it may only be released over seas kind of like "Dear Lie".

TLC may be having a few in-house squabbles at the moment, but the group were united in their joy at winning the Best International Group at this year's Brit Awards.

The girls also picked up no less than three highly prestigous Grammy Awards at the 42nd Annual Ceremony staged on February 23 2000. 'Fanmail' was awarded the Best R&B Album Of The Year while the single 'No Scrubs' picked up two awards including Best R&B Song.

TLC released 'Dear Lie', their third single from the platinum selling 'Fan Mail' album on Dec 6. Despite hitting the Top 10 earlier in 1999 with both 'Unpretty' and 'No Scrubs', Dear Lie failed to make the Top 30.

They have a chance to resume business as usual with the release of their next single 'Shout', which is currently due to be released in late May.

Meanwhile Left Eye has taken two recent opportunities to display her creativity. She has now experienced her first taste of No.1 success in the UK with her collaboration with Melanie C on 'Never Be Same The Again'. This follows her Top 3 collaboration with Donell Jones on 'U Know What's Up'.

Left Eye has also been selected by Calvin Klein to be one of the faces of the company's new advertising campaign. Her photograph on huge billboards will soon be seen around the world.

"Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes Launches Pajama Line"

A forthcoming solo album isn't the only thing that TLC's Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes has on her plate.

Lopes is preparing to launch a boutique clothing line called "Kyle Young: The Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes Collection" with her uncle, Kyle Young, and she will formally announce her new line of pajamas with a party and carnival on Memorial Day weekend in her hometown of Atlanta.

Lisa's clothing imprint will announce its pajama division with a "Pa-Jama-Jam" in Atlanta on May 27. The rapper is not planning to perform at the private party, though there will be entertainment that has not yet been finalized.

While the "Jam" is a private affair, Left Eye is also planning to hold a public carnival earlier that day to celebrate her new pajama line.

Entertainment for both events will be announced in the coming weeks. The "Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes Collection" will be available in the fall in finer retail outlets.

"Left Eye to aye do"

TLC star Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes is making waves again.

The fiery beauty and her new beau, model Sean Newman, told the Daily News yesterday that they plan to marry.

Lopes, who hails from the Logan section of Philly, and Newman, a West Oak Lane native, met just two months ago at a Las Vegas trade show. The attraction was hot and heavy from the jump, they say.

"The second day we were together I said, 'We just met yesterday, but let's get married tomorrow,' " Lopes said.

Not surprisingly, it was the outspoken Lopes who made the first move.

"One day she called me and said, 'Do you want to go to London?' and we just hit it off," Newman said. "It was an instant connection."

After calling to spill the news, the couple called back a few hours later to say they were "not engaged," officially. But last week, the two were spotted ring-shopping in London, while in town to promote Kyle Young Designs.

Newman, one of the hottest new faces in modeling, is known for his fair skin, blue eyes, and straight-back cornrows.

His distinctive look has landed him gigs in major music videos, the most recent being Blaque's "Bring It All To Me."

Lopes, if you recall, was arrested for torching the home of her ex, football player Andre Rison, in 1994. When asked yesterday if she'd informed Rison of her wedding plans, Lopes politely responded, "No. I'm not obligated to pay him that respect."

The burning question: When are they going to jump on over that broom?

"We haven't set a date," said Newman, a Millersville University grad. "We're trying to spend some time together and make sure it's the right thing. We're just shopping for rings right now."

"TLC Members Hearing Wedding Bells"

Two members of the platinum-selling pop trio TLC are apparently getting ready to walk down the aisle.

Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and rapper Mack 10, who are expecting a child together, will marry in Los Angeles in August, according to a spokesperson from TLC's record label, LaFace Records.

Meanwhile, the same TLC rep confirmed that Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was spotted shopping for diamond rings with her boyfriend, model Sean Newman, at Tiffany's in London recently.

TLC is currently on hiatus from recording and touring as a group, though Lopes will keep busy recording a solo album. Though nothing is confirmed, Lopes would like to collaborate with several artists for the project, including Lenny Kravitz, Lil' Kim, and Madonna. Lisa hopes to have the album out by the end of the year.
