I don't think it is possible for anyone to forget the 2002 soccer season. We went in with nothing to lose and everything in the world to gain. The result: the 2002 Berkshire League Champions with a league record of 13-1-2. As the Republican American said, "The run is over. Finished. Step aside, Lewis Mills, your time is up. It was an impressive run, a dominating run, but there's a new Berkshire League champion. " But one year of being champions isn't enough. Winning doesn't make you a champion, defending that title does. And here is our chance.
This year we need to set goals for ourselves and for the team; a team is only as strong as their weakest link. This season we are asking that your hearts go into everything. Being the best starts with your desire. If it's there, nothing can stop you. Each and every member of this team must want to be there, want to have fun, and most of all, must want to win. If it's not in your heart, it won't show up on the field.
Second, we have to realize that we are a team. Each of us has strengths and weaknesses, but when we come together, we will be unstoppable. When we step on the field it's not 11 players vs. 11 players. It's a battle to see which team is the stronger unit. We have to learn to anticipate the move of every player, see the field, create opportunities, and capitalize on them. But above all of that, we have to have fun together.
Lastly, we cannot settle for anything less than perfect. This season we have all the talent, chemistry, and desire to make it to the State Finals, there is no doubt that we are capable of that. It's a matter of utilizing all these qualities to fulfill our goals. For those of you who watched the NHS boy's team play in the state final game, the feeling of just being there is unforgettable; but imagine being on that stadium field. Everyone is there to watch you represent the Berkshire League, everyone is there to see if you have what it takes, and everyone is there to see you take it all home. It's a feeling none of us have ever experienced, but here is the opportunity, can we capture it?
