The Adlai E. Stevenson Expressway is the main connector between the southwest suburbs and the Chicago-Loop. This runs from Lake Shore Drive, west-southwest out of the city. The offical end point is the Tri-State Tollway. In recent years Chicago traffic reporters have ended it at the Veterans Memorial Tollway. That location is also the Will/Du Page County Line. Past that point it is only refered to at "I-55 through Will County."

This expressway was opened in 1964. the orignal name was the "Southside Expressway". It was renamed in 1965 after formor Governor and U.N. Ambassador Stevenson.

The Stevenson Expressway is designated as Interstate 55 the enitre length. Portions from Interstate 294 to Interstate 355 run along a formor alignment of Historical U.S. Rt. 66.

The Stevenson Expressway passes through the following towns in Illinois.

The Stevenson Expressway is controlled by the Illinois Department of Tranportation.
