Francoise Capel ~ Soeur St-Michel

Ancestor on the Presse lines.

She came to Quebec without her family and it is said that she accompanied Jeanne Mance in 1650.  She joined the convent in 1650 and became known as Sister St-Michel.

In December of 1650, she was charged with making the bread for the community.  One night, she forgot to remove the charcoal from the stove and the monestary burned and the community lost everything.

She married Jean Turcot on April 25, 1651, and left the convent on May 3 1651 to go live in Trois Rivieres with her husband.  On August 16, 1652, the Iroquois attack the fort at Trois Rivieres.  The governor Duplessis-Bochart launches an expedition to track down these indians.  Jean Turcot along with Normanville, Francheville, Poisson, LaPalme, Chaillous and St-Germain are taken prisonner.  They were all tortured to death.

Fifteen days after this horrible event, Francoise Capel gives birth to a son named Jacques - her first and our ancestor.  He grows up with many half-brothers & half-sisters.  He marries Anne Desrosiers and they have eleven kids.  In 1691, he is named judge and bailif in the seigneurie de Champlain.  He died young, at the age of 46, and 15 days before the death of his mother.  Francoise Capel remarried 2 more times.
